ADN program: Total circus

Students School Programs

Published

I'm a first semester ADN student at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. I know I'm only a week in, but this program is a total mess. Lots of errors in syllabi and notes by staff; failure to post class items to BlackBoard when promised; little-to-no direction from staff with regard to assignments or tests, which are routinely administered before the material has been covered in class; and a general lack of organization.

Has anybody else had this experience at COD? I have spoken with several classmates, and we all have the same impression of the program. I worked really hard to get into the program, and I don't mind working my butt off, but this seems kind of nuts. Is this just what nursing school is like?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

THE first semester was a wee day out process. The class before us lost half, but we only lost a few. Remember everyone will struggle and be barely passing or failing. You will all be with in 4 grade points of each other. You take the last test, and wait for your scores that you already calculate that 105 or 84 is needed to pass this semester. The grades are released! All the people who actually cared, studied hard, sacrifices and crawled through the assignments with little to no instruction are the ones that get what they need and then some. The lazy, last minute procrastinators, and people who usually skim by are eliminated for the class. After they get rid of the riff raf, the instructor is a lot nicer and will actually help you. From there it is continually evolving and every semester changes everything. All in all the school gave me what I needed , my initials RN!

I graduated from RN program in a community college in CA and felt the same way as you do throughout the program.

The most of professors were unorganized and unsupportive. Some had weird rules about their classes and homework. Some just talked about their life in the class and didn't even teach at all. Couple professors often yelled at students. They have been working for the school for over 10 years, and nobody can let them go even many students complained about the program.

My friend paid a lot of money and went to a private college. Her program seemed well-organized, and her professors were tough but supportive.

I guess many community colleges are same as the one I went.

They don't care about qualities of classes since there are always many people applying to the program because of cheap tuition.

I just told myself these inconveniences were the payment I had to make for cheap tuition...

Good Luck!!
