Hi Mzkitty .....

I was an LPN for about 17 years and wanted to become an RN. Family obligations as well as finances prevented me from going to school for many years. During my search of programs, I discovered many that were considered distance learning. At the time one program was called Regents (now I think it is called Excelsor). However, given my nature to procrastinate, I was concerned that if I went with a distance learning program, I would never finish. I need the structure of a regular class with deadlines, etc. Anyway, I decided to go the community college route for my ADN.

I graduated in 2000 with my ADN and again began to explore ways to earn my BSN and MSN without having to gow to a traditional college. During this search, I discovered the University of Phoenix - online. After some thoughts on how I could afford the program, I decided to enroll. I am mid-way through the program right now and can say it has been a great choice.

If you decide to go the route of distance learning, you need to make sure you are commited to completing your program. I have a number of LPN friends that enrolled with Excelsor or enrolled with a book publishing company (RUE) and never finished. They were left with unfinished contracts with these book compnaies that cost them whether they finished or not.

Good luck.

HEllo all,

I would like to add to what RNPATL is saying about UOP. I teach online for the University of Phoenix (community health courses) and can tell you, from an instructors view point, that the course does take self-discipline and determination. I can tell you that the students I've met through UOP are some of the finest and most intelligent I've met.

Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] if you would like further details and information. Good luck to you!

Hi TMPaul ..... I have to agree with you. Many of my fellow students are really great. During my year or so with UoP, I have really only run into a few real slackers..... but that experience was in my team workgroups and they really did not participate. But overall, the other nurses that I have attended classes with have been awesome. I think the best aspect of online education is you are exposed to people from all over the country, all with differing and varied experiences. Each class has been interesting and in some cases very tough. No one can ever say that you do not EARN your degree when you graduate from UoP.

Thanks for your reply. Patrick:nurse:
