Online Classes

U.S.A. Nevada

So, I'm taking SOC 101 online at CSN. It's a fast-paced, 4 week course. Is it just me, or are these online courses more of a "self-teaching" process? Although I find our readings to be very interesting, I don't think feel like the professor is doing much to contribute to the learning process. I have learned a lot, but it has been through my own endeavors of completing the readings and doing the assignments in a serious and thorough manner. I suppose there is only so much you can do when not lecturing in front of an actual class. This is my first online-course so I wasn't sure if I was the only one with this experience. Any other thoughts?

I used to take a lot of online classes and always did pretty well but then I started going to campus and liked it better. Last semester I took another class online and felt like you did, even though it's not self paced I pretty much felt like I was teaching myself and not getting much input from the instructor on what are the important things to learn etc. I always pass but rarely feel like I take anything away from the class compared to taking it on campus.

I agree. Online classes are usually geared more towards those who can "self-teach." I took the nevada history class online (as well as the same Soc one you're taking) and that professor made us read a lot of things he'd post online, as well as watch a couple of short videos....and that was in addition to doing our text reading and assignments. I guess that was his way of "teaching" us more. I hated it! I really enjoyed my 4 week Soc class....even though the teacher didn't really teach me anything. So, you're not alone in feeling that way.

I'm a little nervous to take Pharmacology online. I sure hope it's not done in the sociology or history online way!! Yikes!!

yea... online classes usually involve a lot of reading! sometimes, you get cross eyed from them darn books! :D but after a while, you can train your mind to see the words like 3d :D anyway, for the pharmacology online class, i've heard from people that are already in the program, that on the day you take your test, you're not allowed to bring any notes, books or etc. to the testing center, i guess that's fair, since we really need to know that stuff anyway. you can't take the pharm tests from your home computer and use your books, notes at all . . . on a separate note, anyone ready for the ati exam on jan 6th?

by the way, i still hadn't bought any uniform nor books .... i hope i'm not the only one :uhoh21: :uhoh21: :uhoh21:

[color=#a0522d]from me (your typical procrastinator).... i think i should do the "polar plunge" and jump into lake mead, that way, i can wake myself up!

lol. Nope not ready for the ATI exam, they said we didn't have to study as there was no pass or fail. if that's true then really what is the point on taking it cause is was pretty expensive. I've bought the main bundle of books but not the pharm bundle. and i don't have my uniform yet either.

The plunge would definitely wake ya up - but I doubt it would help procrastination! (If it did - I'd jump in too!!) :wink2: I still have no idea what's even ON this ATI exam. Is it like NLN type stuff....or is it stuff we haven't learned yet (kind of like a "pre-assessment" test on stuff we will be learning)? Last I checked the pharmacology bundle wasn't even in yet. I sure hope it's there on Tuesday. The fewer drives up to campus, before school actually starts, the better! Thanks for the heads up about the online pharm class. Do you know if the test days are on a specific day and time...or do they give a bracket of time (like say you have to take the test within this specific week)? I, too, haven't bought my uniforms... I'm hoping for more info on Tuesday before I go spend more money. Can anyone remember what they said we'd be doing on Tuesday while we wait to take the exam? I sure hope I don't draw a high number again and have to wait around forever!

Anyone getting more nervous about the semester drawing closer?! Ah!

OH! And I was wondering if anyone noticed on our packet that is to be turned in on the 15th.... it says TWO step MMR?!?! I had the MMR when I was little... but it was only one shot. Do I need another?? I've never heard of a "two step MMR." Any help?!

No idea about the ATI test either...I'm concerned because ATI is the company that organizes the TEAS test that CSN now requires you to take to get into the program. I really hope it's not the TEAS because I checked and CSN only charges $35 for that yet we were charged $109 for this ATI test on Tuesday.

Hrm not sure about the MMR, I had mine redone but remember only receiving one shot when I was younger also. Maybe try and ask someone on tuesday, maybe they'll just require you to have a booster shot or something instead of the two step.

i thought there was going to be math on that exam!! (that's what i was told from the office, i guess they lied).... i still can't believe that test was worth $ 109, maybe ati will give us free books during the semester?? :wink2: .... i can sure use any freebies i can get just about now! .... that first bundle ripped a hole through my pocket! ---- >> lo & behold, people are telling me i'm supposed to get 3 more books and another bundle?? wha??

I agree. I hope those nclex books they were talking about are included in that $109 since they said it was already built into the fee and thats the fee i hope they were talking about lol. Yeah i'm all about freebies also. Yes I went to the bookstore again today to get the pharmacology bundle and 3 additional required textbooks and the total was $308...ouch!!!

I just thought I would respond to the MMR question. Yes you need two doses. I had my first dose when I was 18 months and my second dose when I was 11 years old. If you haven't had a second dose you will need to get one.

Thanks!! I had my second MMR done today. Now everything is done and ready to be submitted for my "ticket to clinical" on the 15th! Yea!

I'm pretty sure the books she was referring to are included in the price of the ATI tests (remember - we have to pay for the other test at the end of the program). I agree - totally not worth so much money! And really - what are we gonna do with MORE books!? We already have 12!!! How fast do they think we can read?!

i agree. i hope those nclex books they were talking about are included in that $109 since they said it was already built into the fee and thats the fee i hope they were talking about lol. yeah i'm all about freebies also. yes i went to the bookstore again today to get the pharmacology bundle and 3 additional required textbooks and the total was $308...ouch!!!

ya, i remember ati lady mentioning that we're supposed to get books with $109 but i was hoping that they would include "freebie books" here & there. . . . ati is probably just talking about a book or 2 every semester?

well, assuming we get through all 4 semesters, we still need to buy mosby, saunders, or both for reviewers. . . 'coz i've been hearing from nursing graduates that, ati stuff is not as effective reviewers, ya still need to buy back ups. nsc uses ati, don't know about unlv though.
