Online BSN program for non-nursing students

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi!

I am a returning student who already holds a Bachelors degree in another field.

I would like to pursue a BSN, but seem to be running into some road blocks.

Has anyone successfully completed an online program for a BSN without holding an RN?

Or....Do i just get my RN first? and if so, are there straight online programs for this?

Thanks!!

Hi Violet,

I'm also going into nursing with a bachelors in a different area (Biology). I chose to go through an associate program instead of an accelerated. It costs much less, and after one year of coursework at my tech school I'm eligible to sit for the LPN exam (maybe there are some programs like that near you?). So after one year I can work as an LPN and pay off most of my nursing school debt. LPNs in my state make a minimum of $18.00 an hour, plus I'd have decent experience when I get my RN-so I should be able to get another job easier as a new RN grad.

Either way, you can get your BSN more quickly. The BSN program I'm going into after I get my RN already has all my prerequisite courses completed. I sent my BS transcripts in to find out. I just need to be a lisenced RN to get accepted.

If you go that route it might take another year or so but the accelerated programs I looked at were 10k more than the associate program. So for myself it made more sense to just take an extra year.

Good luck :)

Marian University also has a sister site in Nashville tn with the ABSN program

Texas Tech School of Nursing offers a Second Degree BSN accelerated program for the student with a previous college bachelor's degree. The BSN nurse is prepared to meet the challenges of a complex and changing healthcare environment in the 21st century. This accelerated 12-month program has online classes with clinical instruction guided by assigned clinical coaches and nursing clinical faculty.Accelerated Second Degree BSN | Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

WGU has one too, go to Online Nursing Program (RN) | Online Nursing Bachelor's Degree | WGU

Thanks!

Appreciate the input!

I did find those, but unfortunately I am not in any of those states!

Awwww.....I bet you love working the NICU!!

Prob. the best and the worst all rolled into one!

Emory University in Atlanta just started an online accelerated BSN. There are set login times and apparently they set you up with the clinical portion near where you live. In addition to normal prereqs, you also have to be a CNA.

TY!! I will look into this!

And i have family in ATL and use to live there.

May be an option!

Most ABSN programs are campus based for both lecture and clinicals. There are hybrid traditional BSN and ABSN programs depending on the state. Western Governors University (WGU) has a traditional BSN program in which lectures courses are done online and clinicals are done locally, but only available in Ca, Fl, IN, Tx, UT. There are ABSN programs such as Marian University in Indy that provide a hybrid program (online lecture courses, on site labs and clinicals). Thanks for the response.

I have looked into the RN programs here; and I am considering that if I don't get into the ABSN or even if I get in to the program.

I am concerned that a few of the places that I can get my RN and get in quickly are not some of the better schools and I really want to be fully prepared to take the NCLEX.

I only have 2 more prereqs for the ABSN.....woohooo!

So I am going to take them at a 2 year school to save some $$. Will still be that much closer to my BSN (:

My friend that went through the ABSN program is working in a hospital here now. She said that the RN's are only making a $1 less than the BSN's and the workplace will pay the RN's to go through the online BSN after they have obtained their RN!

I wish you luck in your pursuits!!
