Oncology Job Interview tips anyone?

Published

Good day everyone! I am a new graduate scheduled for an interview next week in an oncology unit in Florida. Do you have some tips on what things I should focus on? what are the most important issues that need to be addressed in oncology? Are there topics that i should know more about? Do you know any site/resource that is very informative? I am reviewing a lot of things now to prepare myself for the interview but it would be really helpful to be led to one direction. Thank you so much! any information would be appreciated.

Nothing out of the ordinary for me. I just interviewed for and accepted a job in another area from Oncology entirely, and my interviews were pretty similar. The one thing my manager from Oncology brought up and we discussed is how much you are caring for not only the patient, but the family too. The family members tend to have a harder time with everything than the patients and I found that to be totally true. So she just discussed certain situations that I might have to deal with that don't concern the patient at all. She didn't specifically bring up anything else unique to Oncology at all in my inteview.

I wish you luck even though I couldn't be more helpful with your actual question! It was just that based on my two interviews, they were pretty similar for me. :)

1 I always ask the nurse why is that you want this particular job...do you have a passion for Oncology? Although hours and pay and schedules are important I want to know why this job? yWant the job for more than just the bucks....convey that some way

2. Do you have a a curent BLS and ACLS...are you chemo-certified?

3. I always ask some type of question about there communication style and conflict management resolution? So have some answers prepared. A huge part of nursing is getting along with others in order to get the job done...no one wants a trouble maker

4. They usually ask you what are your strengths and weaknesses are?

Be on time ....dress profesionally....bring a notepad...write down some questions you have for them...try to know the name of the person or persons that will be doing the interview so you can address them properly

I have a question, sorry to jump into another's thread. What if you are not exactly sure what type of nursing you want, though you know you don't want regular medical-surgical? I also have an interview on an oncology unit, but I don't know the answer as to why I want to work there other than I think I would learn a lot. Its an area where you don't always have happy outcomes and learning to help patients and families through such a tough time, is well something I want to do. I just don't know if oncology would be best or a critical care area, or even OR.
