On orientation, interview with better hospital

Published

Hello everyone,

I am a new nurse, and after graduation I applied to any and all hospitals near me. After 1.5 months, I just started a job at a very small hospital (actually the only to offer me a position). Just finished up my first week on orientation, and so next week will be my second.

I received a call from another hospital this afternoon. A much larger urban hospital that is level 1 trauma which was one of the hospitals I was very interested in working in. I will interview with them on Wednesday.

If offered the position, do I take it? I worry how this will look since I have just started my first nursing job and will only be there for a few weeks, but I feel with this other hospital I will have a much better experience and will see a lot more complex cases. Also, how will they feel when I mention that I am orientating in a different hospital?

What are your thoughts? Thank you for reading and responding.

Remember the grass isn't always greener, and if that saying turns out true you won't be able to get hired by the hospital you currently work at since that would be considered burning bridges.

I strongly recommend you stay put for at least a year or two!

Thank you for your input Annie, greatly appreciate it!

Ya' know something similar to what you're asking just came up in an "Ask Nurse Beth" topic. If you look up "Quitting Small Residency for Bigger, Better Residency" there are a bunch of responses akin to what you're asking.

I really recommend you take a look at what the responders had to say.

Congrats on being a new nurse. Couple things concern me. First, how would it look on your resume that you were only somewhere a short time? Job hopping is definitely something that employers look at. Second, is the hospital you are currently working at took a chance on you when no one else did. Training and orientation is expensive, and how would you feel if you put all your time and resources into a project only to have it leave you at the first opportunity of something "better'? The job at the big hospital will not be the last one ever available. If I were you, I would consider staying where you are, getting at least a year experience under my belt before I would consider moving on. Taking another interview is even risky proposition, you never know who knows who(m?), and if your current employer gets wind that you are interviewing it might damage their perception of you.

The grass is ALWAYS greener, and you should ask yourself are you willing to gamble everything at this point, because you could end up with no offer from the trauma hospital and a damaged reputation at your current one.

Good luck!

Thank you for your feedback, really appreciate it
