On-line vs. IRL science classes

Published

I just found out that all the classes I need for science can be taken on-line! Would you recommend it? What are the pros and cons? Are some of the following classes better if I take them with a teacher and other students? Thanks for your input!

Anatomy and Phys 1 and 2

Basic Chemistry

Microbiology

From reading your other posts, I know that you have small children.

Since you don't want to sacrafice your time at home, I would opt for the OL courses. Are they are alot of work: yes. But are they worth it: yes.

You can do your coursework when your children nap or after they go to sleep and you can still be a SAHM without sacraficing your education.

I have done all of my pre reqs online and I wouldn't have done it any other way.

My 3 year old loves anatomy and skeletons now! LOL!

Good luck in your decision. I say do it.

You will get a great education and save on childcare as well.

First I must admit that I've never taken an on-line course aside from some training courses at work, so you might want to take my opinion w/ a grain of salt.

For me, I enjoy being in a physical classroom. I find that other students and the professor can be good resources: I am switching careers, so don't get to talk to a lot of people in my regular life about nursing, thus it's a bit of a social outlet for me. Also for the sciences I like the hands-on component in the labs... I'm not sure how they handle that in the courses you are looking at. On the flip side, it sounds like online classes are much more self-directed, so if you work faster or slower than the average student you won't feel bored or rushed. You'd also have more flexibility in terms of when you do the work and can adjust it if things come up.

Good luck with your decision!

Chemistry, Yes that would probably be the best one to take online, although i still wouldn't be able to do it. But I would strongly recommend taking Anatomy and Physiology in a class room and Micro because Lab is very important in these classes and they are alot of work. At my school the nursing program is one of the most popular programs so when students take anatomy they give alot of attention to the student who are going into nursing, as in they focus on things nurses need to really know. Plus this class is HARD i could not imagine taking it online, good luck though
