This is my first post and I think this forum is great. I am 42 years young and strating school this January. I am going to Clayton State and have so many questions. Is Clayton good for older students or would I be better at a community college? By me being as old as I am, would an ADN be better for me? I was going for a BSN originally. Also have any of you older students had to start from the beginning? I have no college and would need everything? This really scares me!! Also this compass test is terrifying as well. Any suggestions or advice would be great. Thanks
jsksmon, just a quick question, but why are you not going for your bsn?? i have really been torn between bsn and adn. adn 3 years vs bsn 4 years. what is the thing that made you choose one over the other?
money was the main determination. at this point, i am paying for my education myself. i am getting my asn at a community college at $93 per hour, vs. a state university at more than twice that. and our community college has a great nursing program. my plan is to get my asn, start working, and then go for my asn to msn bridge at a state university.
Hello!
I am also a non-traditional student with regards to age. I'm 33. I'm sort of starting from the beginning--I already have a Bachelor's Degree, but there are 5-6 pre-reqs that I need to take. I chose the ADN route b/c in my area, there is no difference in pay, and I am able to get into the workforce earlier (read: make a little extra money). I can choose to do a bridge in the future should I decide to go on and do any Master's level work (which I am thinking about, but things change).
I have 2 small children, so I know the anxieties you may be feeling, but we have an advantage as older students....we have more life experiences. Not to say a young nursing student doesn't have a lot of life experiences, but I know I am a different person now than I even was, say, 8 years ago. Blame marriage and Motherhood for that---or should I say--'thank' them for that! Ha!
Good luck to you! I will be applying for Spring '10 admission.
Hi "older students"!! I am 57 years young. I got really tired of the corporate world and decided to do something to help others while I was still "young"! I have a BA in Psychology so I just (just) had to take the science pre-reqs. I started last spring with Chemistry, took A&P I & II over the summer online, and I am presently taking Microbiology and Math for Nursing. Since I am working full time I hope to get into an evening/weekend program in the spring. I will be finished in Dec 2010 at age 59! I have a study buddy who is a year younger than I! I think maturity and life experience contribute a lot to success in going back to school.
You are only as old as you feel!

i had to laugh when i read that at 42, you classified yourself as an "older" student. :chuckle:chuckle:chucklei just got accepted into my school's asn program starting in january. i considered the letter my 55th (that's right, 55) birthday present, which means when i get out of school, i will be 57!! i tried about 15 years ago to get into nursing school, but my situation just wasn't right. it's finally the right time. funnily enough, even though i am older than everyone else in my classes, i don't feel out of place.
good luck in your classes. i hope all goes well.
