Hello:o
I am starting community college this summer to get my nursing prerequisites and general requirments done this year, I will apply to the ADN program and if I don't get accepted upon first try I'll transfer to a university to go straight for my bachelors. Anyhow. My mother has been wanting to pursue the nursing program for atleast 10 years...maybe more. She has tried and tried to go back to school but has been brought down by having to raise 3 younger kids and work fulltime in a degrading job that she absoluetly hates. I love my mom so much and I want to encourage her to start this summer attending college classes for her prerequisites with me. She has completed Ethics and Math as far as I know so she will actually be ahead of me Which is good because she can get stressed easily and doesn't retain information as much now that she is older. I will have full financial aid paid for, but my mom doesn't know if she's still eligible because she had to drop an Astronomy class and I guess failed it or something and she had a horrible intructor...it's complicated but I'm sure she'll find a way to get financial aid.
What is the best way to encourage my mom though? She can be impatient and the road to becoming a nurse is not easy or short I know. Considering the situation I can't see my mom going straigh for her bachlors...she's 39...she might be able to get it online after she gets her ADN though....considering this economy...will it be super hard for her to find a new grad job after nursing school? This worries me:crying2:
I'd love some from the older and wiser nurses
I love hearing everyones advice and stories! And it's nice to hear positive news that there are actually still nurses getting jobs after graduation. Some of the posts on here scare the wits out of me! Lol. My mom has been wanting to be a nurse for ages, now I think it's the perfect time for her to finally follow through with it. She just needs me to encourage her and remind her to follow her dreams! Right now I'm thinking that we are going to do most all our prerequisites together, of course there's a chance I might have to take math before I start A&P so that won't be until fall. Which my mom will be able to tutor me on math because I am horrible at it lol. I'm really excited! I got some letters in today from my communtiy college reminding me to schedule my advising and orientation and of course my mom will be coming with me. I cannot wait!
Hi, Just wanted to add my encouragement! I am the "senior citizen" in my class. I am 49 years old. I started my journey going back to school when I was 46! I have done very well. At the associate degree level I was a 4.0 but now that I am a jr. at the University level, things are a bit tougher for me. I am still do well, but I believe that 4.0 will be broken soon! LOL
Anyway - the point is that is not too late for your Mom. She is 10 years younger than I am - If I can do it, she can too!!! :-)

I would definitly convince her to go to school with you. When i stated my nursing program for my LVN I convinced my mother to quit working her CNA job and go to school with me. It was a hard decision to make, but she did it and now she is about to graduate. It was one of the best decisions she ever made!
