Russia & OKC Bombing

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Oh my God, those pictures from the hostage situation in Beslan, Russia are just heartbreaking. Those parents just bring tears to my eyes. SO many memories of April 19, 1995, when another group of soulless terrorists attacked our children. And the numbers of victims is nearly tripled, not to mention the TORTURE they endured for days before.

WHY are Americans not MORE concerned by this?! Is the GOP convention or Kobe Bryant more important? I am really puzzled that there is not more outrage...are we so hardened by the war on terrorism, or do we just think that it hurts people LESS in other countries, where things like this are more common?:angryfire I just remember the INTERNATIONAL flow of support and prayers for Oklahoma City. It did ease the suffering so much.

I am in Oklahoma too and was remembering the notes and stuffed animals that my kids were given, sent from people all over the country (their school was 10 blocks from the Murrah bldg). I would so much like to send SOMETHING. It is just horrible. I just don't understand targeting children.

My daughter's school was also close by--she went to Rosary.... She and her classmates didn't receive anything in particular, but it certainly made the Murrah Building bombing that much more poignant for us, if that's possible. She talked for years about how that felt, her classmates who lost a parent, her dad's coworkers who were killed.

But I think people have a hard time empathizing at a distance. Consider how many posts seem to come from people feeling a bit desperate and how different our emotional experience is from, say, when it is we ourselves feeling desperate?

And the GOP convention and Kobe Bryant's troubles are not personal. We don't experience pain when we read or hear about them. Not many of us go out of our way to hurt, right?

I understand what you are saying, though....
