OHSU & Legacy Good Sam...

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hi all,

Just looking for a bit of advice. I have interviews scheduled at Legacy Good Sam for their Acute Care Internship and OHSU with their Critical Care Internship...any advice for the interviews? Any thoughts on either hospital and the units, nurses, management, etc? Would love to hear any comments/suggestions you may have since I'm more than a little nervous right now...:uhoh3:

feel free to PM if you like. Thanks in advance.

Well, I didn't get any responses, but just so you know the interviews went quite well. In addition to the OHSU interviews, I actually ended up interviewing for Legacy Emanuel in NE and I can't say enough about how wonderful a fit that hospital and its staff/client population would be to me.

It's not that I wasn't impressed with OHSU, its just that the idea of an inner-city hospital serving underprivileged clients is exactly what I'm looking for. And the idea of self-governance is extremely attractive, never really been a fan of unions, I know it has its place and that it serves an important need but I was impressed that Legacy has not had the need in its 100+ years of existence. Unfortunately my union experience has been that it can develop into an antagonistic relationship between staff and management and that that patients suffer as a result.

Regardless, hopefully I get an offer and will be a new Portland resident very soon. Wish me luck!

Congratulations! You'll have to let me know how it goes. I also asked a question about moving to Portland (just previous to yours) and everyone was unresponsive. Aaah well.

Perhaps you can my resource someday! Tell me, are you a new nurse or are you experienced? Well, have a great day and again....congrats on the interviews!

I'm not taking it personally that no one replied, maybe it was a good thing that I didn't have any preconceived notions before walking into each interview.

I am a new grad (ADN) coming from out of state (Santa Fe, NM) and I applied through the new grad internship process for both OHSU and Legacy. OHSU only has new grad positions available in critical care right now, according to their HR, and although all of my current experience (HUC, extern, and preceptorship) is in critical care, I'm actually interested in returning to the floor so as to interact with conscious patients again...just kidding, I love critical care, but I would love acute care too, just for a completely different set of reasons.

So although I don't want to get my hopes up at this point, I'm really rooting for the Legacy Acute Care Internship. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed. Graduation is tomorrow and I would hate to get a rejection call on the same day as graduation! ;)

Congrats!

The Legacy System would be a much better choice in my opinion. Just FYI though, OHSU also serves a majority of the uninsured in the city since it's in a central loc and it's a 'teaching' hospital. I work for Providence and it's very comparable to Legacy.

Good Luck!:balloons:

Congrats to you!

We have finally sold our home! So I too will be looking for employment in Portland Oregon. Whoever knows any other hospitals besides St Vincents or OHSU to work at that are close to Multnomah Village please let me know!

Sorry I'm not too familiar with the west side of town but there's Good Sam (Legacy System) in NW downtown besides OHSU and St. V's (Providence System).

Don't be too sure about OHSU being the only one serving un/underinsured in Portland. Both Good Sam and Emmanuel do a large amount of that. Emmanuel is a unique beast mostly due to location.demographics and it being a Level 1 Trauma Center, I don't think I could work there. Good Sam though is home, while it has it's downs, for the most it is up.

For hospitals on the Westside you have St. Vincents (Beaverton/Portland), God Sam (NW 23rd in downtown) and OHSU and the Portland VA up on the hill. Further west is Tuality (Hillsboro, a pretty good jaunt from Mult. Village) and Southwest you have Legacy Meridian Park (Tualitin) and Providence Milwaukee.

Good luck, it's competitive out here...

Oh I didn't mean that OHSU is the only one to serve the un/underinsured I was trying to convey it's one of many. I think all the hospitals are seeing patients without insurance for one reason or another. If I didn't work for Prov. I wouldn't be able to afford health insurance!!! Since you work for Legacy Tom, do you hear good things about MT Hood Med Center? I live close to it and am doing LPN to RN bridge and just want to keep all my options open when I start looking for an RN position. I've worked for Prov for almost 10 yrs in one capacity or another and when I got my LPN I found out that they absolutely don't make any exceptions for hiring LPN's :angryfire (I don't think they even recognize them as nurses), doesn't matter how long I've worked there. I'm just hoping I don't get screwed over by the U of P new grads getting positions since they have BSN......

My bad...I now know where you're coming from.

As for Mt. Hood, I don't know too much. They're expanding as they are the only hospital in that general area so anything from the outlying towns in East County feeds there. I had a friend who had their kids there and she loved it. Many of the resource nurses that float to our floor don't seem to mind it. They're very much a community hospital versus the downtown hospitals. If that makes sense.

But if its close...kind of a no-brainer to me. I hate commuting long distances and try to stay close to where I work. That's me though.

Cheers,

I don't know about Tom but most of our float nurses and our RNs from Mt Hood hated it d/t understaffing. Good Sam is a great place, but Emanuel is awesome.

Well I had an interview with an OB/GYN office thats at Emmanuel but the docs also deliver and have an office at Portland Prov where I work so hopefully I can have my foot in both doors. They called me back the same afternoon to set up an appointment for an interview with the provider, so I'm pretty hopeful, but ya never know it's competitive out there. It's hard finding a job as a new grad LPN here thats not in LTC so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
