Office to Hospital again?

Need some advice!

Two years ago I graduated with my bachelors degree in nursing and immediately moved from Wisconsin to Maryland. In a desperate move to ensure I had a job when I moved I took the first offer I got which was at a pediatric private practice, under the assumption that I would quickly apply to a hospital... Two years later, I have finally started reapplying to hospital positions and now it seems like no hospital will even look at my resume because of my strictly acute care experience. While I do enjoy my job at the office, I desperately want to get back into the hospital where I will be more challenged as a RN. Before moving from Wisconsin I worked at the Children's hospital in the CICU as a nurse intern and absolutely loved it. Although ultimately I want to get back into the critical care setting, I would be more than happy just to get my foot in the door on any unit. Does anyone have any advice on how to do about doing this??

Hi there. That's a tough one... I think you are lucky to have a job that you enjoy. Although you are looking for a challenging hospital position, in this economy you might want to sit still till recovery takes place. I think hospitals will start looking at you when the economy improves. Another suggestion is, moving to the southern states where they hire new grads and nurses looking to switch specialties. I moved from OK/TX area where they are hiring and even still paying hiring bonuses and moving expenses. This might be an opportunity for you to get into the hospital environment. Another thought is... the grass always seems greener on the other side... you might actually have it pretty good. Many hospital nurses would love to have a day job with no nights, holidays or weekends (if your office is typical). If you would like the name of those hospitals in the south let me know and I will post it... Good luck!
