OK, a couple of months before I graduated nursing school I applied for a job at a local hospital. I was call for an interview but a few weeks after the interview I and several others in my class were told that there were not as many positions available as they thought it would be, so as you might have guessed I didn't get the job. However, yesterday the same hospital called me and offered me a PRN position and priority when a full-time position comes open. My only other choice would be a LTC facility. I am considering accepting the position because I want to get my foot in the door and gain quite a bit of experience because I will be working in all areas. Also the rate of pay for PRN is very good for this area, but my concern with that is will I get the hours to bring home the type of money I would like. According to one source that works at the hospital I will get the hours because someone is always out....What do you think guys, I've always valued your opinions.
I am glad to hear another success story from a New Grad on here! I was just hired at a local facility PRN position as well, and to tell you the truth they didn't have to hire me at all. I was just lucky to have known someone that worked there who also put in a good word for me. With that being said I also live in California (Bay Area) where the job market for New Grads is horrible (some waiting months & months or others having to relocate)
Congrats again & good luck!!!
I love PRN work. There is something about the freedom of being able to pick and chose shifts that makes it feel less like "work". I went full time a few months ago and was the first person to get the call asking if I wanted the job, because I had meshed so well with them as a PRN. I miss the PRN status because of the freedom, but would never have gotten the full time job if I hadn't taken that leap first.
Take it. You'll get a chance to see the place before you have to commit to a full schedule, and you'll know better if its what you want. How many of us have gone into a full time permanent job thinking it would be great and finding out after the fact that it wasnt so wonderful after all.
