OCCC or OSU-OKC?

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Hi all, I'm a lurker that has come out of the shadows. I currently go to OU-Norman and am 21 hours away from a bachelors in criminal Justice. I had a career change about...4 weeks ago : ) My heart has always been in the medical field, but a complicated divorce got me interested in law. I've read OU CON is not the best for diferent reasons, so I figured I'd try somewhere else though I will eventually try for ARNP. Between OCCC and OSU-OKC, which program is "better"?

I live in Norman, so I'll be commuting for class. I lack chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and micro. At the moment, I can't get motivated to finish a degree in something I won't use, plus pay for it, so I'll probably enroll in one of these institutions. MY GPA is not the best, 3.1, because of all the emotional hardship during a rocky marriage and divorce. I'll probably be working at least part-time during the school year as well, but may only attend part-time since I don't need many courses.

Thank you all in advance.

OCCC has a collaborative program with OU. For the BSN you do pre-reqs and 1 year at OCCC then your final year at OU. this might be a good deal because either OCCC or OSU associate program is going to take 3 years to do- since you have pre-reqs.

Some think that OCCC & OSU offer a 2 year Associates.....impossible. It is so competitive, you really need all pre-reqs done to qualify. The nursing portion is 2 years after that.

Visit both places, compare admission requirements, etc. With any program, there will be people on both sides..loved it or hated it.

Good Luck!

I really don't know anything about OCCC's program other than their administrative staff is rude, lazy and completely unhelpful. I've been going to OSUOKC for 2 years now (now 2nd semester nursing student) and all my teachers have expressed a strong desire for their students to do well and really have a passion for what they do. OSUOKC has a very good reputation (I've worked in healthcare for 4+ years and everyone I speak with says great things about the program). NCLEX pass rates for both schools are consistently above the national average.

Personally, I feel more like I'm attending a university rather than a community college which is a nice feeling. Its kind of sad, but I think people respect us more because they don't realize we're just ADN students..they think we're Oklahoma State University students...which technically is inaccurate.

Specializes in CCU.

I graduated from OSUOKC's program last May and I can say I highly recommend their program. They do actually have profs that care which is something that a lot of programs do not have. Also OSUOKC is a smaller class and the profs seem to be more willing to nuture you and help you to succeed. Nowadays I think people just go to where ever they are accepted. So apply to both if you can. I also want to second what the previous poster said about people actually valuing the OSU name, they always assume it's the stillwater campus that I attented but either way you do have a sense of belonging to a university. Both are rigorous programs but I do not regret going to OSUOKC at all. If you know for sure that you want to switch tracks then it would been beneficial for you to save the rest of your hours for the pre-reqs instead.

Everyone has negative experiences. (I had one at OSU-OKC.) But, I wouldn't just bash them for it. I still recommend their program because it's a great program.

But, to the point of the original post:

OSU-OKC certainly has one of the best reputations from what I have gathered, especially of the community college programs. But, every program serves there purpose. I originally attempted to go to OSU-OKC, but the advisement I received did not serve my best interest and I had to leave.

When I went to OCCC, I felt I had a better experience and I was pushed to take on the exact coursework to best get me into the program. I was not just told to take this course, and that course, until I eventually became a competitive applicant.

(ALSO: SWOSU is supposed to have an excellent program. But, that's not part of your inquiry...)

Truly, I suggest you pull up the Preference Point sheets for both OCCC & OSU-OKC and project which school fits best with the courses you've accomplished and those you still need to work on.

From what I've gathered, at OCCC, 17 points and better than a 3.0 would make you a competitive applicant. I can't remember what the average competitive points total for OSU-OKC is, but hopefully the other two can chime in at this point and fill in the blank for you.

Good Luck on choosing your path!

I am currently a fourth semester student at OSU, save yourself a lot of time, trouble and sleep and go to OCCC
