Obtaining License in NY state seems difficult...

Hello everyone,

I'm currently a registered nurse in Virginia that is licensed in both Virginia and Tennessee. I'm considering taking a nursing job in NYC, but it appears there is a lot of red tape to go through in order to obtain a license. It appears that I have to complete a child abuse course, and have my nursing school fill out paperwork verifying my attendance. How long does this process take? It appears so much easier in other states. Has anyone out there gone through the experience of obtaining a New York state license? Any advice would be appreciated.:uhoh21:

I wish to applaud the Oregon Board of Nursing for their fantastic help and courtesy when dealing with me over the phone. Unlike my home state of California, maybe they're affraid of losing nurses to out of state domains, but talk about grumpy! Sometimes kindness works in favor of retaining good nurses in a state?! NO? Anyway, I do wish you the very best!

Yes, the child abuse course is a state mandate; it's included in our schools' curriculums but outside NY it might not be the case. Sometimes the SBON can really be quite quick, honestly :) You just have to hit it right. Actually, if you have a phone number, I've found being a friendly, agreeable voice full of gratitude for their efforts has moved things even better ;)

I got my NY license a few months after I got mine in Ohio, and I didn't think it was too horrible. I did the child abuse class, took the school form to my academic advisor (well, I guess she'd be my former advisor) and got on NURSYS for the license verification. Maybe it didn't seem like much to me because I was fresh out of school and used to doing mounds of paperwork? I think it took about 4 weeks for my license to get processed.

OT, are you a traveler? You can PM me or tell me I'm being too nosy, but I'm planning on traveling to NYC this summer. I'm very curious to know how things are in the "real world" of travel nursing, if you wouldn't mind sharing

Thanks for the replies. I've called the SBON and the woman on the phone was somewhat short and abrupt. I got the sense that I was taking up too much of her time. She basically referred me to the website which I had already visited. My question is what did you do for the child abuse education. She gave me a website www.nysna.org and told me to take the class online. Has anyone else done this before?

Says it costs $20, and you can do it online. I have been licensed in Ny 27 years, but now am obtaining my license in Mass, and Conn. It all makes you crazy, I agree. Wow....thanks for the website. Ok one complaint...in looking at one (there's three alltogether) application form which is 4 pages long, it wants me to give the exact month and date of every school that I've ever attended....including elementary school. This is one bear of an application....what's up with the state of New York?

Hi,

I took the online course from NYSNA and it was a breeze. If you are planning to take the certification for NY, child abuse is not the only certificate you have to get. You have to also do the infection disease one as well. They offer that at the NYSNA website as well. Every job I went to, they asked for both certificates. Like I said, it was a breeze. You pay the fee, take the class, answer the questions and you can print your certificate after you pass. NYSNA will also send it electronically to the education department, but just in case print the certificate and have it for your records.

this is true in ny where i am registered u have to tak a child abuse course and

ny is very hrd to get a license i heard california also, i dont know why since there is a dier need for nurses, here is the website that explains what u need
