I'm a California BON NCLEX-RN passer.I have not been able to obtain my California RN license because of my failure to provide a US Social Security Number because I'm still a resident of the Philippines.I learned that from another forum that one can claim their US RN license by applying for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number(ITIN) as a substitute for the SSN.Are there disadvantages in doing this?
Yes, the point is that they want to only give licenses to those who are legally permitted to work in the US, so it's logical that an ITIN isn't suitable.
I understand, and I agree with you. When you have people who are trying to bypass the system at all costs you sometimes have to suggest for them to contact them directly to get the answer thereselves. I've noticed when it's a simple question they will respond to you right away. If it's a complex question with 20 subquestions then they will take a bit longer to respond. I'm glad that CA is finally getting with the program and requiring a ss#. As someone else pointed out in another post the BRN should focus on those who are eligible to work in the US, so that the process may go faster for them.

I emailed the CA BRN and asked if an ITIN # can be used instead of a SS# and I was told "absolutely not". According to their licensing department, I was told a ss# is the only valid # to use. I would contact licensing and ask them directly so you can read it for yourself. I asked this question a few months ago, and since then the person in charge of licensing has changed you may find a different answer. Good Luck
