OB Physician Core Privileging: How many deliveries per year, per doctor??

Published

Hi Everyone,

Is there a certain number of deliveries per year that each of your physicians has to do annually in order to maintain OB delivery privileges? I am curious.

Thanks!

Layna

In Canada they do have a minimum but, I don't know what it is...

I do know that alot of doctors here don't want to do deliveries because of the cost of insurance do the low birth rate....

they are opening MD / FP run centres that specialize in maternity care for the family physicians that do want to deliver babies but don't have enough patients to keep justify the cost of insurance.

Gosh I surely would not know that one. But when I go to work tomorrow nite, I will ask the docs! Good question!

Hmmmm, that is a good question. We do about 4,500-5,000 deliveries a year, and we have 2 very large OB groups that are responsible for at least half of that. But then there are other docs that I swear I only see once in a blue moon, so I don't know how it works.

I'll ask around at work this weekend.

Thanks, Everyone. I would appreciate the information before our next OB Committee meeting. We are a small rural hospital and our OB/GYN is wondering if all of the docs should have a minimum number of deliveries per year to maintain competency.

Layna... go to the net and seach associations - med associations usually have info on it.... the number may be or no be and may very for country/ province - state.... U can also try checking by calling hospitals that have labour and delivary departments...

Most sites I find usually have quick responses... and if u write to one that doesn't know - ask in the email - if they know of anyone that does know..... you could be surprised at the results....

Awesome luck to ya...

I was just at a mother/baby group - run by the city here.... the nurse said there that physicians don't have a minimum... midwives do... though... any info from the other parts????
