OB nurses, did you start out in OB? Did you know you wanted to get into OB from the beginning even if you didn't start there?

I'm doing adult med-surg right now and I'll stay here for some time since I'm still relatively fresh out of school. I know it's not where I want to stay over the long term but everyone tells me it's the best place to be as a new nurse. And so I'll be here for probably another year. However, to my surprise, I really enjoyed the OB rotations during school (especially NICU). How does one go about getting to OB eventually?

Start applying right away. If you are obligated for a year at your present place of employment, then start at least 3 months before your contract is done.

Best wishes!

I would like to know this as well. I want to go right into NICU nursing upon graduation in May, but there is such a shortage of GN positions that I'm not sure its smart for me to be so selective. I just don't want anything to slow me down from doing my masters a year later to be an NNP...

I went to nursing school with the sole intent of working in L/D but due to the job market and saturation of nurses where I am located... I have spent over a year in med/surg. Just hired into a new facility in OB. I was told that my med/surg base was what they were looking for. They weren't hiring new grads presently.... that has just been my experience in central OH. I am sure other areas of the country are different. Hope it works out whenever you are ready to make the move...

OMG my dream has always been to be a OB nurse !! I am currently in LPN school and plan on furthering to RN and I would absolutely love to work as an OB nurse. Of course I havent had the clinical rotation yet but I doubt I will change my mind because I have always wanted to do that!

Not sure where you are located but in my area... LPN's are not hired into OB anymore. The LPN's that have OB jobs are being phased out. Some facilities will uses LPN's as scrub tech's for c-sections, but most are not working on the floor.:o

Best of luck to you!:D

I started the path to become an RN after having my first 2 children. The ultimate goal is to be a Lactation Consultant, and I would prefer to work with mom and baby, over the actual labor and delivery. I am starting actual Nursing 1 in Jan, and am currently a leader applicant for La Leche League. Once I am an actual leader, I can start the process of becoming an IBCLC, and I have been debating getting certified as a child Birth Educator, or postpartum educator. I am starting to get scared, now seeing how NO ONE is hiring new grads, and forget about new grads on maternity units. I really don't want to bide my time on a med surg floor, but I guess I won't have a choice.

Hopefully being an IBCLC and having a BSN will make me marketable? Should I get the other certifications? Any thoughts or advise?

Having had to bid my time on med/surg for over a year... I definately think the more certifications you have the better. But maybe those with more experience will have other ideas?? Best of luck to you!!!
