Please ask for some additional instructions on the unit. 4 months is still in the newbie category and it's expected that you would not yet be expert. EFM is a valuable and widely used tool that can lead to unnecessary cesarean sections if not accurately or appropriately interpreted.

Good luck.

First, what is the baseline?

How is a variable defined? How is a late decel defined? What EFM training have you had?

AWHONN TRAINING.  Baseline 130-140

lte decel defined as a decrease in fetal HR after a contraction.
variable decel abrupt decrease FHR last >15 sec and less than 2 min to return to baseline

Not exactly. A late decel is defined as a GRADUAL decrease in fetal heart rate. Gradual is defined by NICHD as at least 30 seconds from onset of decel to its nadir.

With that in mind, does that help you differentiate between a late and a variable?

Oh yes! I understand!
