hey all-

as if i haven't changed my mind about my future plans enough in the past eighteen months, now i'm looking into being a doula.

i've been to dona.org and found three doulas in my area. my question is, is it even worth investigating apprenticing with one if i'm not certified?

thanks for your help.

Hi Punim,

You may want to call around and ask. Some are willing to apprentice doulas while others may feel that in essence by taking you on as an apprentice that they are training their future competition (I ran into that problem).

I would HIGHLY suggest taking the training course before you ask about apprenticing with anyone. Apprenticing is NOT required like a direct entry midwife, for example. You can pretty much learn on your own. That's what I had to do and I would have given anything to have learned from someone else.

I hope that you can find someone who you can observe. FWIW, I welcome the opportunity to pass on what I've learned. Now that I'm going into nursing, I won't be in the business anymore.
