I'm thinking I'd like to get certified as a lactation consultant - I'm a RN (A.S.)

I'm not clear on how I'm supposed to get credit hours toward the certification with IBLCE. I went to their website - I saw there are different total hours with the different pathways - but how do you actually get the credit hours?

I'm curious. Even if you're an RN, do moms tend to disregard lactation consultants who are not mothers themselves?

No, I don't think so.

I do get asked if I have kids by most of my labor patients, but not usually if I just go in a room for lactation help for someone else's postpartum patient.

And when pts do ask, I think it's just more conversational chit chat than something that would make them disregard my care.

As a mother, who had never heard of this profession before one walked into my room, the thought never really entered my mind. She more educated me on how to use the breast pump, how often I needed to pump, the nutritional requirements, facts about collosterum (sp). She didn't have to "sell" me on breastfeeding b/c I had already decided to breastfeed my daughter b/c she was a preemie. My daughter was almost 12 months before she was ever sick the first time, and I strongly attribute this to breastfeeding.

However, I am sure that mothers that are having bonding issues, babies that are difficult to get them to "latch on", and mothers that need to breastfeed preemies that flat out refuse to do so, I am sure the LC's have a very difficult time with these types of cases.
