Hey everyone,
I was wondering what your pre-nursing GPA was prior to being accepted or rejected from the Oakland University 2nd Degree program. Just curious what they are accepting or rejecting these days as far as GPA's go. I recently met a girl who had a 4.0 in all of her pre-nursing classes and still did not get in. Kinda freaked me out. I'd love to hear what your experiences have been:)
Best of luck ot everyone!
Josette19 - I only have Org. Chem left to take this fall too. Did you decide where you are going? I am at OCC-HL, in the night class. I am also taking Informatics this semester through OU.
GinaNightengale - Thank you for your feedback ;-) Good Luck in the program. Do you think your GPA played any role in things? My current GPA is 3.86... and I still have Org. left to take... I am hoping that this is an acceptable GPA.. I know that they say OU takes a holistic approach to admissions, but with as competative as the nursing programs are these days, it is only natural that GPA would be used as a tie-breaker when there is a large pool of qualified candidates.
Did you have any extra -curricular service/ volunteer experience... and if so, do you think this helped? I have approx. 100 hours of ER volunteer time with Crittenton, I was involved in many different service organizations in college (years ago), and I still participate with Project Linus, and a pediatric hospice group in St. Louis when we go home to visit over the holidays (we help hand out Christmas gifts and Easter Baskets to the affected families). Even though I would do these activities regardless of whether I was applying to nursing school or not, I am hoping that this will strengthen my position.
@kvisintine I'm planning on applying to U Of M Flint as well in Jan so I don't know if i'm going to take org che this semester I just don't know what teacher to take I was going to take Hithcock in Southfield but have heard bad things about her! I'm currently registered for micro and an online class for micro for disease and health. That sounds like a really good GPA, mine is not that high I only have about a 3.5 right now but a couple of those classes I already had from when I was 19! I may re-take them if I need too! But OU doesn't put all their eggs in the GPA basket they consider all 3 things! So good luck to you! If I happen to get registererd for that chem class I will let you know so we can study together!
I applied to OU and even though they say they take a holistic approach to admissions, you better knock it out with your interview and and essay if your gpa isn't that high. I retook 2 classes to boost my GPA. The interview and essay I'm sure play a role, but not as much as a great GPA will.
I took organic chem at OU. If you can take it at a CC your probably better off since OU has that goofy grading system.

I had a 4.0 science G.P.A. for all of my courses. I wasn't asked about any volunteer experience in my application process. Maybe, it's because I applied for the accelerated program. I feel as if I applied with a strong background in my courses and work experience, therefore this may have helped a bit. I'm sure you'll be fine with the process as well...your GPA is great. I took organic chemistry last summer and it wasn't that bad once I sat down and taught myself the things that bothered me most. The "Dummies" series was very helpful. Remember, Mary Eats Peanut Butter as one of your memory tools...you'll get it later.
@ nightingale I appreciate your comments! I was planning on applying this August as well but I still need organic chemistry and there is not very many good teachers out there for this class so I don't know where I want to take it I have the choice of OCC or Macomb. I still have to take the math placement test as well! I am applying to U of M Flint as well I actually really want to go there over Oakland because it's much closer than Detroit! My sister is also a nurse and yes nurses do get very competitive but she is very supportive she is about to get her masters in December and my sister n law has a NP for many years and also did the accelerated program through Wayne State! So it is very possible to follow my dreams I'm planning on looking at the light at the end of the tunnel and not letting anybody get in my way! Thanks again and good luck I heard that program is very intense and hard my friend went thru it a year ago!
Of course this program is going to be intense! That's part of the excitement...anything worth having is worth working hard for. I start the program in January, but why do you say that Oakland is closer than Detroit? Have you spoken with anyone in the office yet because I was told that the courses are at Riverside Institute (Downtown Detroit). That's about 25 minutes from where I stay, but definitely feasible. As for the organic chemistry course, I had a blow-off instructor and ended up having to teach myself everything I know about organic chemistry :-/ Good luck with everything!
I say U Of M Flint is closer to me than detroit I live in Grand Blanc it's 15 min from Flint! And Detroit is a little over an hour away!
Whoa! Yeah...that's definitely a no-brainer. I thought that you meant that someone told you that OU's campus would take place in Rochester, MI. If so, I was in the same boat...thinking that courses take place in Rochester vs. Detroit. I didn't know about a satellite campus/facility in downtown Detroit. Luckily, my first 3 nursing courses that start in the next few days are all online because of the program designations. That's a time and money-saver! I hope that everything works out for you in terms of convenience.

Gina,
the accelerated program currently takes places in Detroit. All classes are held there. However, I know OU is constructing the new building so come next year, if finished, it might move there. But the campus in Detroit does have a simulation lab that the new building may not have, so who knows.

Yes, I just found that out within the last month when I spoke to someone in the nursing advising office. The entire time that I had been reading "Riverside Institute" on my paperwork, I never looked its location up. I thought that the Riverside Institute was only for prospective LPN students. However, I see that it is utilized by the 2nd degree students as well. Luckily, either campus is only 25-30 minutes away from where I live. Are you a current/past student in the program?
