Oakland University Accelerated BSN fall 2011 Cohort

Published

Hi! I was wondering if anybody out there has interviewed for Oakland University's ABSN program for the FAll of 2011 cohort. I think it will be 3 to 4 weeks before we find out if we will get accepted or not. I wish everyone good luck and hopefully receive good news!

Mine says pre-nursing but they still haven't cashed my check.

Let me know what the adivsor says about orientation in May. Do you know if orientation is one day or a couple of days long???

Thanks!

Hey CD820,

I will email tonight, maybe I will hear back soon. I think orientation is only a day, but I am not sure. Does anyone else know?

Thanks!

I was informed that our status on sail would change in a couple weeks. Since the semester is over I wouldnt expect it to change until January.

Havent heard anything on orientation.

Greetings everyone Im new to this board and greatful to have discovered it. I to have been accepted to OU's fall 2011 accelerated program. It is a great feeling. I look forward to meeting and studying with you guys that made it as well. I enrolled in pharm and nutrition online for this upcoming semester. I have to retake my Lifespan psychology course because they dont accept it from wccc. Like psychology changes from college to college, (go figure). Anyway, good luck everyone and I look forward to meeting and studying with you guys.

Hi Kvisintine,

Yes, I took my NA course through Red Cross. I was very impressed with the course. I went downtown. The experience you will get is great. Just understand that you will only be certified when you pass the state exam. If you decide to work in a hospital, they typically don't care if you are certified. If you plan on working in LTC, you will need to be certified within 6 months of starting. I applaud you for your decision to be a nurse. Do not worry about your automotive background. I come from the same background. As a matter of fact, Oakland has a programs for displaced automotive workers and the encourage people to start in their nurse assistant or PCT programs. Trust me, you will likely not be asked any questions about your current career. After all, this program is second degree and pretty much everyone is going for a different direction. There's absolutely nothing wrong with changing careers. In a few cases you will find students just graduating with another degree(i.e. sociology, psychology, etc) but most will have worked for a number of years. Frankly, I don't get why these people spend all that money and not just do the traditional route.

Anyhow, best of luck to you. I think you are well on your way to making a strong impression. If I can just offer a few more bits of advice. 1). Put your heart and soul in your goal statement...be honest, and show you passion. 2). Be prepared for you interview..I say this because I have heard so many say they didn't do well in the interview (this can make or break you regardless of GPA). The interview is not difficult - just be yourself and sell yourself. 3). If I were to take the NA class, I would do so through Oakland.

Good luck again.

Hi Kvistine,

I agree with the above, however, I was asked about my current career (12 years and currently employed in Automotive) and why I didn't choose nursing from the get go. Yes they do have programs for displaced autoworkers however, if you are still employed in your current field they want to be sure you are making the right move as you said....I think your explanation is great....but just stating the obvious of being prepared.

Hey everyone,

I emailed the nursing advisor and like the earlier poster said, orientation will be sometime in May. I just thought I'd update you. :)

Thanks!

Does anyone know if we follow the normal school breaks like winter and spring break?

Specializes in PCU.

I haven't read the entire thread, so my apologies if this is old information:

My understanding is that orientation (for the Fall cohort) is held in May to allow for forms, like the physical and immunization information, to be completed.

I also understand that no lectures/clinicals are held during breaks in the middle of semesters (like Spring Break), but that some students use the time for extra study or writing previously-assigned papers that may be due in the days after break is over.

I believe that Christmas break, because it occurs after the end of a semester and grades are due by mid-December, is a complete break -- I would imagine the only assignment to be securing books for next semester, of course :)

Good luck to all students in the ABSN for fall 2011.

Hi everyone!

I was thinking about taking all three nursing courses this winter term? Has anyone done this and what

are your thoughts about this? I am admitted to Fall 2011 class and was thinking I just want to get the work

over with and that maybe I will be selected to move up to May 2011.

I wouldn't advise taking all three together. It can be done but you will be very, very busy. Plus, you won't learn as much. I would take Pharm and Nutrition together and take patho in the spring. Pharm is a ton of work with papers, exams, etc. Patho has a ton of reading and quizzes.

I don't think I'd take all three together either. I took Patho and Pharm together and I was pretty busy. I was reading and writing a ton! I suppose it's possible, but I think ejcl68 is right - you won't learn as much.

nnarod - did you email them to find out if you can be moved up to the May start date? What do they do for orientation since I assume it is quite a few weeks in advance? I am just curious.

Thanks!

does anyone know how financial aid works?
