NYU-Langone Hospital Loses Power - Patients Being Evacuated

NYU-Langone's back-up generator has failed and patients are now in the process of being evacuated and transfered to NYP, Lenox Hill, Mount Sinai and other Manhattan facilities. Power outage has also affected internal telephone service as well so staff does not have a way to contact family members as of the moment. Management does state it will begin doing so soon as possible but their first priority now seems to be the orderly and safe movment of patients.

From what one has heard via local NYC news coverage first patients being moved are NICU and other CC unit patients. A woman who was in active labour was transfered to LH.

I cannot even imagine... Drills are drills, but this is an entirely different ballgame! I hope we get to hear some first hand accounts after things settle down.

Can only imagine how NICU nurses must have been going crazy! Can you imagine transporting 215 patients down several flights of stairs? Onto stretchers, into an ambulance and one assumes then a nurse has to go with the transfer to give report/hand off at the new facility. Come back and repeat.

I cannot even imagine what those poor patients and nurses had to deal with. From what I've been able to read it sounds like everyone survived; that alone is a miracle to me. I can't imagine if this happened in my PICU/PCICU, where a majority of the patients are intubated and some are on ECMO...what a nightmare.

I'm sure the nurses there kicked butt. God bless them.

"The Ed Show" on MSNBC interviewed a NICU nurse from NYU on the evacuation.

Ed describes her as "one of the hero nurses" that night.

NYC is crazy right now if you have ever seen any of the zombie movies where the lights are out and the roads are like parking lots that is what nyc is like right now
