I am currently employed with NYP Cornell and was curious to know how those employed at the NYP uptown location like it. My unit has gone through a lot of director/manger changes and I pretty much feel like I'm riding the waves of a sinking ship. I was considering transferring uptown for that reason and because that location is much closer to me anyway. I currenly work in critical care if anyone would like to share. Thanks.

Can you tell me what kind of critial care?
Cardiac ICU stepdown unit. I truly feel like I have to get out of there, its become too much and it begins with having no leadership, no Director of the Dept and no Clinical Mngr for our unit.

I worked uptown when it was CPMC. During the six years I was employed there, I worked GYN, L&D and Peds... very different units with very different managment. L&D was exceptional there. I don't know how it is up there since the 'fusion' with Cornell. I will say, since moving out of state... I've missed the old place tremendously. I was a new grad there. I think in large metro hospitals, so much depends upon the particular unit itself and the dynamics going on therein. Good luck to ya.
PS: Have you considered St. Francis (Cardiac Center) in Roslyn? (Long Island). I worked POH ICU there and it was great & well managed.

I find that those working at NYP-Columbia are generally happy. Now, i work in peds so i dont know about how the adult side is...
the patient population is a totally different story, though...the hospital serves the community its in, and that means that Cornell and Columbia have 2 very different patient populations.
Iris,
I worked on 8 South - Peds Cardiology/ Infant Medicine. This was back in the late 80's. I floated to your unit (PICU) on a few occasions. I'm in peds homecare now but have had a serious itch to get back into inpatient.
Oh awesome! i am doing the PICU nursing internship, and my inpatient rotation was on the cardiology/neurology floor...which, i'm thinking, was probably the old 8 south. small world. hey, if you have the itch...LOL. I am in love with CHONY right now...everyone is so nice and the new building is just beautiful...
New building? What units does it house... tell me more! Peds neurology used to be a separate unit on 11 south. I guess many things have changed there over the years. Babies Hospital used to house all the peds units including the NICU, newborn nurseries, PICU, and L&D. I had worked L&D there also - on 12 South. Was BH torn down? Or how is that building being used now?
The new CHONY building went up in 2003, i think. it houses all of the peds floors, for the exception of the peds ED (which is still in the old BH). The new building is referred to as the "tower". So, 4T is your med/surg (although everyone gets a little of everything), 5T is mainly oncology, 6T is cardiology/neurology, 7T is the NICU, not sure what 8T is...9T is the PICU, and 10T, i think, is L&D.
Remember the old PICU (the one in babies?), that's still there. What they did when they built the tower was expand the PICU. So technically, there are 3 PICUs...the old one (9 north), the new PICU (9 central, which is actually in the tower), and 9 tower (the cardiac PICU). And, as you can see, they divided cardiac and regular PICU when the new building was built.
BH is still there. A lot of it is used for doctor offices, clinics, etc. They really truly should knock it down and rebuild it...but that costs lots of money...LOL.

Hi
I am currently orienting on the cardiac step down unit at NYP-columbia and I love it. The nurses there are wonderful and the overall culture of the unit is very welcoming. They all seem to get along very well together. I am actually going to CCU but I would recommend this unit if you want to stay in the same area. Good luck!

not sure what 8T is
There's not a patient care unit there, I know that much. 8 Central has some overflow medsurg and NICU spots. If you go in the main elevators, they don't stop on 8, and the service elevators only have 8F (which is 8C) and no 8R (which would be 8 Tower, if such a thing existed).
Okay, now I want to know what's on that floor!
