NYP reference check failed

Published

Hey all, I am hoping to get some advice. I applied to NYP, interviewed - and they said they loved me. The recruiter called right away after the interview, saying how well it went, and this was a done deal and to submit references right away. I did. As soon as the references came finished, I got a call saying they cannot move forward. Aside from the awkwardness that all my coworkers now know I want to leave and could not get the position, I am petrified that among my references there are one or more people who do not think I deserve to progress in my career. I work in a very toxic environment, in a hospital that is totally falling apart, and they are losing people every day. I am desperately hoping someone with knowledge of how NYP works can tell me :
1) Will they reject a candidate if even one of the 5 references provide a negative?
2) What does a reference check include?

3) Am I permanently black listed at NYP now?

It is sad because I felt I was so close, I loved everyone I talked to over there so much, it felt like I was going to finally achieve my dream job and now I am back here again. And I am petrified to apply anywhere else because I still need these references and I have no idea who it could be out of the 5 I sent. Please help!

Do you know for sure it was a reference that derailed your offer?

As far as references go in general, this is why I have a problem with them because references are normally do prior to an offer which means a current employer is "alerted" that an employee is potentially leaving thus the current employer can always give a negative reference thus sinking the employees chances of moving on. I also don't think references are a good way, in 2025, to adequately assess a candidate. Verification of employment, yes, but references, no as often times the potential employee doesn't have the opportunity to respond to a negative reference which to me isn't a fair/accurate situation.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It sucks and the potential employer should've given you an opportunity to respond to anything negative reported.
