NYP New Grad Meet and Greets

U.S.A. New York

Published

I've been invited to one of NYP's New Grad Meet and Greets and would like to know what the entire vetting/evaluation process is like. I tried asking via e-mail, but the only response I got from them was essentially to ask them when I get to the Meet and Greet.

Has anyone here been hired through this process (or at least been through a significant portion of it) and can give me some insight?

Primarily I want to know how many "stages" there are and how long it takes between each stage. All I know that this Meet and Greet is like a pre-interview. How long does it take them to let you know if you'll move ahead in the selection process? And *if* I move ahead in the process, how many more interviews/evaluations does it take for them to decide if they'll hire me?

(On another note, are there similar new grad events like this for any other hospital systems in NYC? The closest things I've found so far are open houses, but I assume only the experienced RNs actually get interviews/jobs from those.)

I went to a meet n greet in december. Basically the place was packed with tons of people who weren't even invited so literally no breathing room! You sign in and then go wait on line for your designated time. Once its your time you get seated at your designated table with about 5-8 other people who are just as desperate for you a job. The recruiter will collect your resume and then ask everyone to introduce yourself and say why you wanted to become a nurse and so on. Then the recruiter will take questions. Make sure you ask questions and don't be shy. You want to stand out. The whole thing lasts about 20 minutes and then they give you some freebies as a consolation prize for a job..... After the meet n greet I was emailed a career battery which I assume I passed BC the recruiter I met with has contacted me a few times and told me I may be able to take part in a new grad med surg float program.....that's basically the whole process. Awaiting the dayi finally get a job!

NYCRN, did you decide not to join the program? If not, how come?

I also went to the meet and greet and yep? It's exactly like NYCRN said. I took the battery last week so hopefully I hear something!

Goveg, well supposedly the program will start in the fall..... ill believe it once I have an official offer!

I went to the Meet and Greet in April. My experience was slightly different. It was not as crowded as mentioned above. I had 4 applicants at my table (including me). We all had about 1 minute to talk about ourselves and then a couple minutes to ask questions.

A couple weeks later, I got an email for the "next step" to take the Career Battery.

Today (about 2.5 weeks since the meet and greet) I got an email "congrats"... I am a "top new grad".... and I will be contacted as openings come up. But, it says not to apply to anything with them, and just to wait, and to take any other job if I get other offers.

So... I'm not sure how promising that is. I already graduated and have a license and already one other interview, so I might not have time to wait around for NYP.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I had my interview day a few days ago, and (going by what you all said) mine was crowded even by cattle call standards. Just as additional information for anyone who’s going to one of these in the future, I thought I’d describe my experience too.

I made the mistake of showing up half an hour early in spite of the fact that the e-mail said to only arrive ten minutes before my scheduled time. Now, I made the assumption that they just didn’t want people making noise and/or trying to get a leg up on the other job applicants by getting more time to talk with the recruiters. I just wanted to get indoors and rest. As it turns out, their waiting area is veeery tiny and simply couldn’t hold the number of attendees if we all showed up at once. Seriously, do NOT show up more than ten minutes before your scheduled time. You wouldn't want to squeeze in there anyway.

As for the actual interview process… We all got in a long line to get our names checked off the list. We picked a random piece of paper out of a basket, which assigned us to our tables for the group interview. We also got another piece of paper to write down our three preferred specialties. (Frankly, I’d be happy with wherever they stick me. I hope they won’t disregard my application just because none of my “preferred” units/floors want to interview me.) They took a few minutes to talk with us and get us to, literally, take a breather, which I appreciated…but I would’ve appreciated using that time to talk with the recruiter even more.

As you probably figured out, we (my table/group) barely had time to talk with our recruiter. My table had eight job applicants, and all the other tables were just as crowded. Our recruiter introduced herself and gave us brief instructions. We were to give her our résumé and paper with our preferred preferences, introduce ourselves, and talk about a significant interaction that we had with a patient. All of us had some sort of binder or folder. My binder was filled with recommendation letters, certifications, etc. But it was pointless because none of us got to submit any additional materials, which I understand. The recruiters wouldn’t want to haul around a tower of papers, but it was still disheartening. I got to speak about myself for less than a minute, and that was the only interaction I had with the recruiter. The last applicant didn’t even get to finish her introduction and story before they ended the session. (Don’t worry. Our recruiter let her stay behind to finish her story.) None of us got to ask any questions.

Everyone in the room then moved to another room with a projector so we could watch a video presentation about NYP’s nurse residency program. They then explained that the next step was that we would receive an e-mail in two to three weeks with either a rejection or a battery test. (I couldn’t determine if the battery test was for filtering/rejecting more of us or for determining where we would best fit, but I assume it’s another filter.) They said that we aren’t allowed to apply to any other NYP openings because attending the meet-and-greet was essentially an application for all the new grad positions in NYP. There was time for two people to ask one question each. Then it was over.

I think the take-away lessons (for NYP new grad group interviews) are:

  • It’s a waste of time preparing any papers other than your one-page résumé.
  • Prepare a very quick elevator pitch for yourself as a potential employee. (About half a minute.)
  • Have a very quick story ready to share, and it should be about a patient interaction you had. It almost goes without saying that the story should highlight how awesome the patient said you were and/or how great of an impact you had on the patient’s or their family’s life. (About half a minute.)

My overall impression:

A bit disheartening. I’d be surprised if our recruiter remembered any of us well enough to say if NYP should continue considering our application or not (but obviously she has to help make that decision anyway). Given what little interaction my group members and I had with her, the only thing she could say is that none of us are sociopaths (probably), but then again, this is my first group interview so I might be judging it too harshly. I’m guessing they’re all like this unless you’re lucky enough to get into a smaller group. Oh, well! Here's hoping I was memorable and in a good way!

The career battery is another filter. Either you pass or you don't. Its not a waste of time if a job comes out of it. Yes it may be a year before they call you with an offer but who knows if you will have a job by then? New grad jobs are really hard to come by and sadly you may be waiting a year (or more) to get one. Just know going into the meet up that you literally have 2 minutes to make a good impression.

How did you guys introduce/talk about yourself? I'm having a hard time constructing an elevator pitch so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I recently applied to NYP as a new graduate, and unlike your experience of having the Battery Test after your group interview, I applied and submitted my application online, and moments later received an email to fill out the Battery Test. I'm assuming it's the same one, where ethical and situational questions were asked. The deadline to apply for the Meet and Greet was Nov. 14, and just tonight I received a date and time for the group meeting. Has NYP switched the way they conduct their Meet and Greet? Has anyone else received the Battery Test immediately after submitting an application online to the event? Was this a filter to prevent the apparent long line and crowded space?

My group Meet and Greet is next week and I hope someone can give me some more guidance or idea as to what to expect!

Thanks!

jrzRN, I was also invited to the meet and greet. I was sent a Nurse Career Battery Assessment on the same day I completed my application as well. Perhaps this is the new process. I will really appreciate pointers from others as well. Thanks

Did anyone wind up receiving an offer?
