NY nursing 101

Published

Hello! I am a nurse from the Philippines and I will be taking the NCLEX exam this year. I have heard that experience is a must to get into a hospital in NY. Unfortunately, I have no experience yet except for hospital exposure during my related learning experience. What is needed for someone in my position to get a job in NY? I have heard of nurses who go to the States with no work experience but managed to find a hospital and at the same time gives sponsorship. This is the same opportunity that I am looking for. I have a tourist visa, what are my options? Thanks.

You're allowed to take the nclex on a tourist visa? I have classmates on a student visa that are afraid they can't register for the nclex after classes are done.

Im not taking the nclex in the United States. I'll be taking it somewhere in Asia. I think that it is possible to take the exam on a tourist visa. You are going there to take the exam, not work. Several of my classmates did that. I'll try to ask them just to be sure. :)

If I'm not mistaken, to be a licenced/registered professional here you need to be a citizen or legal resident. I know because my best friend went through a lot of trouble to get her licence after gratuating (as a dental hygienist).

Hey,

They just announced that they are going to have a NCLEX testing center in Manila. Just a heads up if you haven't taken them yet. Also, I know NYU has a lot of nurses that came from the philippines. You could try there. I wouldn't be worried if I were you as long as you pass and get your visa/whatever you need to work in the united states. You also have to get your license for NY, which I hear takes a very long time compared to other states. Another reason why I wouldn't worry is because the nursing shortage is higher in nyc than the rest of the country, and so many other people are/were in your position as the Philippines is the country with the highest percentage of incoming foriegn nurses (at 43%), so other nurses have done it, and gotten jobs. So I wouldn't worry.

Good luck!
