I know this is kind of early but I just wanted to check if anybody plans to apply for the Spring 2011 nursing program at BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College) in NYC. I just met the preclinical advisor this week and he gave an update that CUNY eliminated the need for non-preclinical students (like me who's currently at liberal arts at BMCC) to first change their curriculum to preclinical before applying for the nursing program.
Here's an April 30 memo from the nursing department for anybody who wants to apply for the nursing program:
------------------
TO: All Non-Nursing Students
FROM: The Nursing Department
DATE: April 30, 2010
RE: Admission into the Nursing Program
Non-nursing student who want to apply to the Nursing program please note the following:
1. Admission into the Nursing program is based on the GPA in the four required prerequisite courses (Eng101, Psy100, Mat104 and BIO425) and the overall GPA for both the Day and Evening/Weekend Nursing Programs.
2. Students who want to apply for the Full-Time Day Program must wait one semester after completion of the four required pre-requisite courses to apply for admission into the Nursing program.
3. Students who work full-time during the day and want to apply for the Part-Time Evening/Weekend Program must wait one semester after completion of the following courses: ENG101, PSY100, MAT104, BIO425, BIO426, BIO420, and PSY240 or SOC100 in order to apply for admission into the Nursing Program.
4. Please be aware that admission into the Nursing Program is also based on seat availability. The College does not guarantee admission into the Nursing Program.
5. In order to advance into the Nursing Program, students must provide documentation for one of the following categories:
US Citizenship, Permanent Residency, and International Students with F1 status, Granted Asylum, Refugee Status, Temporary Protected Status, Withholding of Removal, Deferred Enforced Departure or Deferred Action Status by the US Government.
-------------
By the way, for those who are applying in late October for the Spring 2011 program, make sure to bring your advisement sheet and transcript if you took some prereqs outside BMCC. If you're applying for the evening program, also bring proof of your current employment.
I'm sooo excited to apply and can't wait for October!
Best Regards,
Dee
Hi Solange,I hope your first day of class went well! Do you know when you guys are going to take your math exam? Ours is on Feb. 19 :).
Best Regards,
Dee
Hey Dee,
My first day of classes went really well, I really like the professor and everyone in the class seems really nice. We don't know the day of the math exam yet because she wants to elect class officers who will then take a vote to see when the class wants to take it. I am assuming that it will be in the first 2 weeks of classes. Oh, we also found out that we will be doing our clinicals at either Bellevue or Lenox Hill as well as Mary Manning Walsh. I cannot wait to start clinicals, but first we have to spend the first 4 weeks in the nursing lab to learn how to take vitals and all that other stuff. But we were assigned our drug cards assignment, which is due in a couple of weeks so I have to start those soon.
I hope your class went really well too and I hope you like the professor. Do you know a lot of people in your class? Keep me updated for when you buy shoes so I can get an idea of what some good ones look like.

Hey Solange, glad to hear everything went great in your first day. I'm in the morning section so i'll have to wait till tomorrow.
Can you go a little bit over how was the day?
did you start class right away?
did you guys have a one on one with the professor?
Did the professor collect all the "paperwork" that we were required"?
What are those drug cards assignment you were referring to?
Sorry for the tons of questions but I want to know what to expect so it would be awesome if you can describe your experience a lil...
Thanks

Hi Caro1130,
I don't know how much of help I can be, I don't know how the morning prof will handle her class, I get the impression that every prof is different and runs her class in the way she sees fit. But I can tell you how my class went if that helps, class started a little late to give stragglers a moment to come in. The tension was a little thick in the room, it was the first day of classes and most people did not know others so the prof wanted to break that tension immediately. We all introduced ourselves, discussed why we were in nursing and where we were from. A Pearson representative was supposed to come to class to show us how to use "My Nursing Lab" but unfortunately she had strep throat and was unable to come. So we just discussed where our clinicals would be, talked a little about the math exam coming up.
But mostly it was just a meet and greet, she really wanted us to be comfortable and really get to know one another so we felt like a strong unit instead of just classmates; and she did a really great job, by the end of class we had all gotten to know one another and were joking and laughing together so the ice was eventually broken. We didn't really have one on one time with the prof, but we could ask any questions we felt pertinent and she was happy to answer them.
As for the paperwork, she didn't collect any of it, she told us to bring the health forms and stuff to the nursing lab on Tues (the day that we are normally at the hospital) so she could collect them then. Also, the nursing chairperson came to talk to us and just congratulate us on getting into the program and welcoming us again, it was very nice of her.
As for the drug cards, she wasn't going to give them to us that day but since we had some extra time she handed out the assignments and they are drug references on cards, every class will have to do them. They gave us a list of 14-15 classifications of drugs that we have to write about on 8x5 cards, we have to write what they are, their therapeutic effects, dosages and administrations and nursing implications. The format was a bit confusing so she will bring examples for us to see on Tues so we know how to write them. She said they are important for when we do our clinicals as well as to learn about the drugs that we will commonly see on the job.
All in all, it was a good day and very interesting and I'm excited to start learning the nursing skills on Tues in preparation for the Lab Practicuum coming up. I hope this helps and that your first day goes well!!

Hey Caro1130,
Are you in the afternoon section? Or are you in the morning section. I thought the first day of class went really well. I am excited to begin clinicals in a few weeks!
