BMCC Spring 2011 hopefuls?

Published

I know this is kind of early but I just wanted to check if anybody plans to apply for the Spring 2011 nursing program at BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College) in NYC. I just met the preclinical advisor this week and he gave an update that CUNY eliminated the need for non-preclinical students (like me who's currently at liberal arts at BMCC) to first change their curriculum to preclinical before applying for the nursing program.

Here's an April 30 memo from the nursing department for anybody who wants to apply for the nursing program:

TO: All Non-Nursing Students

FROM: The Nursing Department

DATE: April 30, 2010

RE: Admission into the Nursing Program

Non-nursing student who want to apply to the Nursing program please note the following:

1. Admission into the Nursing program is based on the GPA in the four required prerequisite courses (Eng101, Psy100, Mat104 and BIO425) and the overall GPA for both the Day and Evening/Weekend Nursing Programs.

2. Students who want to apply for the Full-Time Day Program must wait one semester after completion of the four required pre-requisite courses to apply for admission into the Nursing program.

3. Students who work full-time during the day and want to apply for the Part-Time Evening/Weekend Program must wait one semester after completion of the following courses: ENG101, PSY100, MAT104, BIO425, BIO426, BIO420, and PSY240 or SOC100 in order to apply for admission into the Nursing Program.

4. Please be aware that admission into the Nursing Program is also based on seat availability. The College does not guarantee admission into the Nursing Program.

5. In order to advance into the Nursing Program, students must provide documentation for one of the following categories:

US Citizenship, Permanent Residency, and International Students with F1 status, Granted Asylum, Refugee Status, Temporary Protected Status, Withholding of Removal, Deferred Enforced Departure or Deferred Action Status by the US Government.

-------------

By the way, for those who are applying in late October for the Spring 2011 program, make sure to bring your advisement sheet and transcript if you took some prereqs outside BMCC. If you're applying for the evening program, also bring proof of your current employment.

I'm sooo excited to apply and can't wait for October!

Dee

Hey all,

This question is for the day students, have you guys done the math review online at edgt.com? When I try to change the instructor to my professor, there is only Prof. *****available. Is this true for everyone else? Just wondering...thanks in advance!!

Hi Solange,

I'm doing the edgt now and it seems whatever is in the paper given to us during the orientation, that's the only prof's name available. Also speaking of clinicals, we have Bellevue, Mary Manning Walsh, WoodHull and Lenox Hill.

Has anybody bought nursing shoes already? I need something really comfortable as I always get leg cramps if I stand/walk too much all day and I wonder what brand I should buy (which is hopefully not too expensive). Wish we could just use white sneakers sigh...

~Dee

Hey Dee,

I haven't bought nursing shoes yet, I'm waiting till we start clinicals because I'm not sure which ones to buy. As for the edgt thing, I definitely saw the evening professor on the list but maybe it's gone now. I'll keep an eye out for it though.

But thankfully I finally got all of my papers, health forms and insurance in my possession plus finished reading all the pages assigned, so I'm feeling pretty good and able to relax before classes start for me on Friday. I hope you're able to find some good shoes, if you find a comfortable pair let me know! Thanks!

Is it true that calculators are not allowed on the math exam? I just found this out, so now I have to practice even more math!!

Hi guys. I am worry because classes begin this Friday for me since I am in the afternoon section. The problem is that I am out of the country and I was supposed to go back to N.Y today, but Jet blue canceled my flight because of bad weather. Therefore, I will be absent the first day of class.

Well since its the first day of classes I don't think you'll miss anything too important in regards to nursing class. However, the prof might be a little upset, I don't know her at all and am not sure her policy on missing classes. At least you're not missing an actual clinical, you're only allowed one absence from clinicals the whole semester.

But unfortunately, the weather in NYC is pretty bad, there looks to be snow for the next few days with no reprieve. Email the prof right now and explain your situation, it is considered rude to not let your prof know ahead of time that you are going to be absent. Hope you make it back in time for class on Tuesday!

Hi Solange,

Yes. Calculator is not allowed so definitely need to brush up on basic division/multiplication. I finished the edgt test and there were definitely a lot of big numbers in there. I am also worried on conversion as I keep forgetting conversion numbers between household and metric (e.g. ounce to ml, Tbs to ml, etc).

~Dee

thank you xilostgirlxi very much for answering me back. Are you in the afternoon section as well? I do not know the email of prof.... Do you know it?

Hey Dee,

Thankfully I'm pretty good with multiplication and division, I've been doing so many problems from the math 104 book without a calculator and its been pretty good so far. Although the profs should really tell the students that calculators are not allowed. I agree that the conversion b/w metric, household and apothecary systems is difficult, especially since in the book they are not commonly used past the first few chapters. I'm praying that the 10 questions don't involve a lot of household and/or apothecary conversions.

Do you know when your test is? I have no idea when mine is haha!

Hey Steffanie,

I am in the afternoon section as well, I don't know the email address but I can almost guarantee that it is somehwere on the BMCC website, do a prof search and I'm sure you'll find it. Email her asap to see if there is anything you can do to prep for Tues like readings that will be assigned. You definitely want to keep on top of the readings, especially if you'll be absent. Hope it all goes well!

Hey Guys, could any of you in the afternoon section share a little bit about the first day of classes?? How was it? What did you guys talk about?....I'm very curious!! lol

Thanks...and hope you all had an amazing day!

Hi Solange,

I hope your first day of class went well! Do you know when you guys are going to take your math exam? Ours is on Feb. 19 :).
