NY nurse jobs

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a social worker who is contemplating going back for a nursing degree. I was curious to see what the job market is like for new nurses in the NYC tri state area. I live on Long Island.

Thank you.

I don't have any info on NTC but I'm thinking of going for my MSW! Why are you interested in changing to nursing?

Primarily because all of the decent paying social work jobs are about 3 hours roundtrip commute for me. I live on the eastern end of Long Island, and most of the jobs are in the New York City area. Also I was contemplating getting a nursing degree and then doing an online program for psychiatric nurse practitioner, which builds on the social work with being able to give out meds.

Specializes in Community Health, Med-Surg, Home Health.

It's hard to say with this economy in the Queens area because two major hospitals closed-Mary Immaculate and Saint John's Hospitals. This means that those nurses are already out of work. What I am being told, however, is that some state money (from stimulus?) is being sent to some of the other neighboring hospitals to hire staff because we are taking care of those thousands of patients who suddenly have no place to call their hospital home.

While these times are weird, I have hopes that the economy will pick itself up...somehow. Best wishes on your new career venture.
