So, I made an unintentional potential release of PHI a few years ago. The PHI never made it into unauthorized hands, but I was referred to the Texas BON and completed their requirements to clear my license. Today, having forgotten about the incident, I applied for a travel nurse position and was turned down because of a Nursys record. Help me put this in perspective, please. Should I plan on never being allowed to travel? How about hospitals? Do they all check Nursys and disqualify anyone in the Nursys database?

Nursys get's their information directly from state BONs so I think you should start by contacting your BON to see if the discipline is still on your license or when it will fall off if ever. There is a way to dispute what is on Nursys but I am not sure if anyone has ever been successful at having something removed.

Was there discipline taken against your license? Then yes, I would say it would appear for quite some time. My state's BoN publishes disciplinary action taken against nurses back to 1993.
