nursing in the UK on a working holiday visa

Hi,

I've been reading through threads re: nursing in the UK and am trying to process the current picture of the nursing situation in the UK. I am a Canadian nurse and have finally gained registration with the NMC. I have now realized that the fight has not ended here and that finding a job will be a big problem. I am currently living in scotland and hoping to find a job, but I have been getting mixed information regarding my working holiday visa. I realize that employers will not hire me into a permanent position. Does anyone know how I can got about getting a temporary contract to suit my working holiday visa?

thanks!

Hi and welcome to the site

In what capacity are you in the UK with? I really think it will be hard to get a temp work permit but really the only way to find out is check with HR in local hospitals and see what they say. Also check out http://www.jobs.nhs.uk/

Thanks Anna for your quick response to my post. I have a working holiday visa that allows me to work in the UK for 12 months. I am crossing my fingers for a travel nursing company called Continental Travel Nursing to get me a three month contract in Edinburgh, but sadly that option doesn't look to promising. I have gone for an interview for a general surgical post and was turned away as the hospital would not be able to sponsor me. It has taken me so long to get my registration in the UK that I'm not yet willing to give up the fight.

I am also thinking of getting a contract with continental travel company. I am a British Citizen living in the USA and in the process of getting my license from the NMC. How easy was it getting the interview with the hospital in Scotland and what type of package was offered to you from continental? Thanks Sue

Hi Sue,

Their chat is that they will get you a three month contract (I suppose anywhere in the UK). They will reimburse your IELTS fee and at the end of the contract give you 175 pounds travel fund. They can find you housing at 75 pounds per week. They are quite friendly and can kind of help you through the registration process. Now here comes the down side. They don't offer contracts ahead of time. They will put you forward for jobs maybe six weeks before you are registered (so probably the start of the ONP). But this means that you are already in the UK. And then you wait. Ofcourse this may not apply to you if you did your nursing education in the UK and have your registration with the NMC, if that is the case they will start looking for you immediately. For me, it is not a very secure process, I'm still crossing my fingers, but because I want to work in Edinburgh it is not looking so great (I'm not sure if I were else where in the UK if it would be any different).

cheers,

Janine

seems strange if you already have the visa that they turned you away. Have you tried any local agencies? It may be because you are looking temporary at work and hospitals don't want to think they will be looking for another nurse in a few months time
