There is a guy who I work with in Texas just got just his registration and he has a ADN. He did some home study course from Scotland to get his extra hours. He is married to a Brit. , it can be done with a ADN but it appears rare.

Blossum I spoke to the guy at work and he did have to take the onp but it was last year when you could do it on line, he said they changed it just a few months ago that you have to go to the UK now and do the course. I still can't see how you are having to do it . Keep me posted on how you get on.

Provided you are accepted and meet the minimum standards to be accepted on the NMC register, as a nurse you will be required to undertake the Overseas Nursing Programme, if you have trained outside of the EEA. Why do I need to complete the ONP? Any nurse who qualifies outside the EU / EEA and who wants to register to practice in the UK is required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to undertake an approved Overseas Nurses Programme (ONP). I found these quotes from the internet from places where they are running the courses. I just had to prove to the NMC that I had current CEU'S. Blossom you originally did your training in the UK which is in the EEA /EU. So, you should not have to do the course.

He just told me he got his RN and nothing about the ONP. I will ask him when I see him as he has never worked or lived in the UK. And, yes he got his RN with a ADN which I was shocked about. So, it can be done with a ADN.

Iwould ask to speak to the person who is dealing with your case. The call centre people really do not know what is going on. They do not know what to do in special situations like yours. They just read from the book of rules. Sue

Hi Blossom 48 When I applied and got my registration with the NMB there was no mention of me having to take the ONP course. Going through the agency did not have anything to do with me not taking the ONP. I had to prove that I was currently practicing as an RN ,which I am in a level 1 trauma centre. Do you currently practice as an RN? Am I right in assuming that they will not issue your RN permit without the ONP course. I would question them again as many times they screwed up my paper work. They never told me I had to reactivate my EN before I could get my RN PIN even though they knew I had old EN PIN. You will not need a work permit as you are British. You should have a national insurance number. Keep me posted as I am interested in you adventure and I can phone the agency and find out any more information if you need some. Sue

seamusglas I have read all the posts that you have posted and am curious as to where you are from.

We have PALS , or as you know it as APLS. If you have ENPC as it it includes APLS then you dont have to take a seperate course for APLS. ENPC and TNCC last 4 yrs . APLS and ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) only last 2 yrs.

Thanks for your replies. I already have TNCC and ENPC. I am coming back to the UK next year and will be working in an ER and wondered if these courses were accepted. I was amazed at the cost of the TNCC in the UK. In the states is is about $210. approx 110 pound. The book is the same, so I am sure the course material is . Thanks again. Sue

hi Scootergirl You will not have to take the English exam,if you are a brit. I am not sure about the ONP. I did not have to take either. I just got my registration early this year. I was an SEN in the UK and did my BSN RN in the states. Cariad is right you will need to have a BSN in the states. It took me 8 months to get my registration. It is a long process but worth it. I was and still am working with a company called continental travel nurses. They really helped me with working things out with the NMC nursing board in the UK. When I phoned the NMC I would just get the call center people and get no where with finding out the status of my application , when they called they knew how to get through to the officers making the decisions and find out more. They also do 13 week contracts at some of the larger hospitals in the UK providing accomodation. Check out their site continentaltravelnurse.com Sue

I am presently working with continental travel agency and wanting to start a contract in Feb 09. I am a brit and just got my RN license in the UK. (I live in San Antonio TX) In order to be able to work over in the UK and get your RN you have to have a BSN, and as for the visa's I am not sure how that goes. The contracts are only for 13 weeks, so I am not sure how the permits go. The agency are very very helpful, they really do know how to handle the nursing board in the UK. They deal with a lot of nurses from Australia and New Zealand. I went to their office when I was back in the UK last year.
