Myself and my husband are hoping to immigrate to Canada. The thing is I have no idea where to even start looking at employment. Im qualified in paediatric and psychiatric nursing. Im 34 years old ( im not sure if this will be an obstacle. Is anyone able to tell me what the first step I should take is/ what paper needs to be completed. Ive contacted so many canadian nursing websites and keep getting referred to someone else- very frustrating.

Thanks in advance

Hello. The first step is to contact the Collage of Nurses for whatever province you are considering moving to. They will let you know what steps you need to take to obtain licensure. A good website to check for employment is Workopolis. Hope this helps and good luck!

Pick a province.

Contact provincial college of RNs to see if meet educational requirements. Canadian nurses are generally trained and then specialize after graduation. So you may have issues in some provinces with meeting the basics. Provinces west of Ontario have specialized Psychiatric Nurses with a different educational pathway. They also have their own College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses.

Deal with the federal government on immigration matters. You don't need an agency. Canada House in London should be able to set you on the right track.

Hospitals hire via their own website.

What does you husband do? Sometimes it may be faster to migrate with the spouses trade/profession.

There really isn't a nursing shortage over here. New grads are having issues finding full time hours and there not infrequent hiring freezes.

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

Yes as Fiona points out, Canadian nurses are generalist trained and cover adult, peds, OB/GYN and mental health in school. What province are you planning on moving to?
