Nursing in Tucson.....

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I will be relocating soon and one of the options is Tucson. I am already in love with the city itself but need to know more about nursing jobs in the area (specifically in labor and delivery). What is the average pay for an experienced RN? First, what is the market like...will I even be able to get a job? What hospitals are the big players for LD? What is the work environment like (nursing satisfaction)? Is there mandatory OT/on call? How much vacation time do you get a pay period? Is there a union? What are staffing ratios? Any other thoughts?

I'm a nursing student and live in Tucson.

Arizona is a 'free to work state'. That means unions are almost nonexistant and have little power.

There seems to be ample nursing jobs for those with experience, but I don't really know. :)

Tucson Medical Center, Northwest and University Medical Center are the biggest LDs in town. Call their HRs and see what they say.

I work at University Medical Center, which I am well pleased to work for, and so are a majority of the nurses are too. Pay is relatively lower compared to Phoenix. You will not be able to find a job in L&D from what I hear because it's very competitive and people stay around for a long time. There's no such thing as a union in arizona or mandatory OT. I do get put on call once in awhile when there is low census, which I use my PTO for, but they usually give you the option to be placed on call or not. I work in the ICU so my ration is either 1:1 or 1:2. The floor units have a ration from 1:3 to 1:5 on nights.

IMHO...I wouldn't move to Tucson.

I just saw on the news that Carondelet healthcare just had a career fair here in Tucson and there are still job openings. Here's their website http://www.carondelet.org/
