Hey anyone see the article in this weeks NT comparing US & UK mortality outcomes?? I can't link it because to read the whole thing you have to register (which is free). If you're interested go to Nursing Times - Home, click "NT Clinical & archive" then "clinical extra", once you've registered.

In a nutshell it shows that, even though the US spends more on healthcare, our mortality rates are lower! Not all of it can be explained away by the lack of access or welfare for poorer people in the USA either - well that's what the article says anyway.

Sure makes interesting reading..........although the cynic in me wonders if it's government funded so they can say that even though they spend less per head we still do okay so it's alright for them to continue to squeeze every last ounce of blood from NHS workers!!!

Yes I thought it was interesting & I wonder what it really is that makes the difference - do you think it could be all those growth hormones in the cattle etc out there? They are banned in the EU but still legal there, despite consumer pressure groups.

I always buy organic milk & dairy when we're out there & once I live there I'm going to get organic meat delivered too - have already researched my sources!

Also they use an awful lot of artificial colourings, especially in kids stuff - I'm always scrutinising labels - even if they say "all natural" it often isn't!!

Couple that with the fact that many US citizens don't seek help early enough because of cost fears & you may just have the answer (or a large part of it anyway).

Of course NONE of this is going to make a jot of difference to me wanting to go out there!! Besides the way our NHS is being treated I bet it won't be long before the story is the other way round - & that won't be because the USA has improved either!
