Nursing Student Unethical Behavior

Published

Hello,

The reason I have originated this topic is that I've just discovered an instance of highly unethical behavior in a nursing student, which perhaps could, and should, get her expelled. Apparently she taking a nursing research course. Yet, she is soliciting assistance in finding peer-reviewed articles for her research topic. This is a BSN-level class; yet, she is too lazy to do her own research. I have a copy of the email she sent out, which was forwarded to me. I believe that her university should be informed, or even the commission which accredits her university. I don't think she should be soliciting such assistance or obtaining the services of others to write her paper. The idea that she might do so with impunity makes me furious, to say the least.

It's not my decision, of course, but I don't think that people who would act in this manner should be allowed to graduate. I have been a registered nurse since 2010. Fortunately, I recently obtained employment as an RN, but many people who graduated before and after me have not been so lucky. Recent surveys on the nursing workforce corroborate that this is, perhaps, the worst time in history for new graduate nurses to get a job. Please advise me if her actions sound like something that any nursing program would object to. I can supply additional information about this (her email) if required.

I guess its not just the mean old nurses eating their young but the young ones are eating each other too! Seriously what do people get out of tattle-telling on others. Does it make them feel impotant or something?

She did not ask any question that could not be duplicated by using any on-line search engine. The only differance is that she asked people who are much more likly to be able to direct her to sources that closely fit her needs.

Just Google the word breast and you will come up with all kinds of information. Everything from bra sizing to breast cancer and even Media sites. She needs a much more narrow response that that.

Have you even tried to google the topic? I did. I found a ton of articles by unacceptible sources. Most of what she will need will only be forund in profession journals-something taht she might just have some trouble getting acess to.

The information will still have to be read, sorted and processed-just like information that she got from google. All the request is doing is possible saving her some time.

You do realize that she may very well never do another research article in her carreer? Most nurses don't! Why are her reaserch skills so important to you?

I think that your getting your nose all out of joint over nothing AND sticking your nose into something that is none of your business. What gives YOU the right to be so judgemental?

The student in question may have been lazy.

or

She may have exhausted all her resources and was reaching out to others who may have some knowledge on the subject.

Either way you don't know if she was doing her research or not.

In life you pick and choose your battles.

How does this affect your life? It's silly because you are not even a student!

Can you sleep at night knowing you could possibly get this student in trouble if she was only just reaching out for help? It seemed like you already had made your mind up to report the girl before you even posted this.

Not to be rude but I would really try to find other and more meaningful things to fill your time with.

there has been many times where i have hit a brick wall in researching a paper, so i did ask for help. i did not ask anybody to do theessay/report for me; it was just another source of information from a fellow student. it is up to her to see the value of the article. plus there is aproper way of giving credit to other researchers in a paper. yes itis easy to put information into proqest or other search engines and get results in five minutes but it may not be the information you want and there seems tobe over 1000 results at times and having to filter through all that can be areal pain. from all your responses it sounds like you only want people to agreewith you. i respectfully do not agree with you, you are wrong, and you should mind your own business.

The overwhelming consensus here is that the student did nothing wrong in asking for help in locating scholarly sources. I teach an online nursing research class and would find no fault in what the student did. In fact, in my own doctoral research, I have sought help from our research librarian liaison (or others, such as my professional contacts here on AN) in finding articles and scholarly sources that are relevant to my dissertation topic.
