Nursing Student needs HELP

Published

Hi all! I am new here and wanted to say Hi. I also wanted to ask something. I am in my second semester of a two year RN nursing program. I feel totally lost and I feel I can not remember anything. Is this normal or should I get out of the nursing program? I like people and want to care for them and I also want to help provide for my family but I am not sure if what I am feeling is normal or not. If any of you have any suggestions on what I am feeling or some major help with my nervousness that I get, I would gladly accept! I really do not want to fail at this but.........Thanks in advance!

Feeling overwhelmed is NORMAL in any point in nursing school. I am not sure what you mean by you don't remember anything. Maybe you are just nervous and stressed-out, and THINK you don't. I say, forge forward, do the best you can and hang in there. Don't be upset. We have all been there. Nursing school is rough! Go easy on yourself. Eat a really good diet, get rest as much as you can, exercise even if it's just for 20 minutes each day. When you feel anxious take some VERY deep breaths, til your lungs are completely full to capacity, and then empty until you can do no more. THIS one exercise alone, helps a LOT with anxiety.

Develop good study habits that work for you. Some like to study in groups; others prefer to be alone. Do what works for you, but make the environment pleasant and quiet, if at all possible.

Take heart, you will do fine. Don't place unrealistic expectations on yourself and MAKE SURE YOU CELEBRATE small victories, like getting good grades on tests, or doing really well on clinical rotations, by eating a meal out or getting a new clothing item or book. SOMETHING to reward yourself each hurdle you pass. It works!

Good luck to you and hang in there!

THANK YOU so much for your voice of encouragement! I do get nervous and stressed out and yes, I do believe that is why I think I can not remember some things at times. I get overwhelmed with all of the info we learn one hour and then asked to repeat it the next hour. (Slight exaggeration there:)). The tests are not so much of a worry as much as the clinical experiences. That worries me since that should be where I should shine, or at least I think so, if I am to become a nurse. I will be starting my OB/Peds rotation this week and I am nervous about it. So far I have only done a nursing home rotation and I do not think it has prepared me for the hospital. I think because of my instructor and because of I am afraid of doing something wrong. I feel like I am supposed to be playing the role of Nurse while having the brain of a nervous student. Not a good combo. Anymore helpful tips would be greatly appreciated also!:) Anyway, thanks for listening. My husband is a great listener and wonderful supporter but he does not understand what it is like to be a student nurse.
