Very interesting article from AJN asking the question..is there a nursing shortage?
What say the nurse recruiters/ hiring managers about this issue??
AJN REPORTS: Nursing Shortage, or Not? Roxanne Nelson BSN, RN
AJN, American Journal of Nursing
May 2009
Volume 109 Number 5
Pages 21 - 23
To me, it all boils down to the bottom line. Money. Why would a hospital organization who may already be struggling financially want to spend thousands of dollars to train a new graduate RN in this "business" of health care??
The only solution I have for the hiring freeze for graduate RN's in NJ who actually have to stay in the area or want to stay in the profession would be to volunteer at the hospital where you want to work, continuing your education..ACLS, BLS/ certification/online classes, review nursing content, review case scenarios...
Do something to keep you mind busy. It is so easy to fall into the rut of depression. Take care of your minds and bodies so that when you do get an interview you would be able to enthusiastically answer the question "why did you become a nurse?"
Thank you all for reading.. and best wishes to all those still looking for a job as a RN..

shortage? well.. nurses are always needed.. the need for care is there.. everyone gets sick and/or old..
the availability of actual hiring, paying jobs are scarce.. hospitals are laying off left and right.. yes there is a need, but there is no money to pay.. and to add on top of that.. everyone and their mother (in some cases, literally) rushed to nursing school because "they will always need nurses" "nurses get paid alot" "you will always have a job".. there are a ton of new grads being spewed out into the job market every few months, competing with those that have been laid off...
