Those interested in a nursing career as a life career choice and not only for the money know what I mean about this... Doesn't it just make you mad when random people just come up to you and tell you: "You know the nursing shortage isn't real right?" Ugh what nerve do they have! Of course I know there is no nursing shortage I read the newspaper, I watch the news, and I have friends that are in the nursing career, what do they think we live in a bubble or something???? However, that is the career I chose, that is the career that I want, and it has nothing to do with the pay! And well call me optimistic, but I believe that once I am done with my career and I do become a Registered Nurse, I know I will find my ideal job in the specialty that I want and be happy, because if you are going to do something that makes you happy, there is no impossible!!! Right? What do y'all think, has anyone else experienced a situation like this before?
Ok I guess I didn't explain myself good enough when I say random people I meant yes people I do not know but obviously I was doing or saying something to do with nursing school and they just butted in and said that comment and it has been twice that I have been told that. However, it really does not get to me at all like a whole bunch of you are thinking all I'm saying is that I am not in it for the money BUT because that is what I want my life profession to be. And I also just wanted to let people who are thinking of being a nurse just for the money that the nursing shortage is fake, and the only way to land a job as any other job is by actually demonstrating you have what it takes to do that job and well that takes hard work and dedication. In my opinion nursing is not for everyone I think you really have to like what your doing or else you'll be another nurse who is miserable.....
While your perseverance is admirable....I believe that Praemonitus praemunitus or forewarned is forearmed.
I will tell you that in many parts of the country the average job search is 14 to 18 months and NOT always in you preferred specialty,...or even in acute for that matter. Hospitals are increasingly only hiring BSN grads.
In this current job market you are going to need perseverance and dedication just to obtain a position after graduation but remember there will be at least 30 other nurses who are just as determined for that same job.
Heck in this current climate just entering a nursing program is difficult....they are very selective.
I think they are just trying to be helpful. 10 years ago, or more, when there was an actual nursing shortage it made sense for a lot of people to go to nursing school, those who didn't really want to, those who already had a good job, those who couldn't afford to etc. but since there was a true shortage of nurses anyone who went to school could almost be guaranteed their choice of jobs. Don't like LTC? No problem here is a job offer for your dream job plus a nice sign on bonus!
That isn't the case anymore, if you truly want to be a nurse, go for it, but please know it might be quite a while before you have your dream job.
If nursing shortage really exist , then how come some of my friends who are looking for a job did not find one. How true is the articles and propaganda regarding this topic. I am happy to hear that you are an optimistic and you chose nursing because you believe in the real definition of care. I am proud of you and you are going to be successful in your future specialty.
