There are a few resources you can use when looking at schools:

ACEN and CCNE are the two bodies who provide national accreditation for nursing programs. Both websites offer a search for accredited programs.

Your state BON should have a list of schools that are approved. Schools that have conditional approval should be thoroughly investigated- why on they on probation? They may also provide a list of NCLEX pass rates. NY BON's is here.

Hello,I'm a new member.I'm a stay at home mom,I have not worked or gone to school in 10 years!.I will be 40 in august.My dream for many,many years has been to be a nurse.But i dont even know where to start.I know that i should look for a school with a great reputation,high graduation rate and affortable.my question is how do you find that school with so many mix reviews?I have not found one school where i can find all those qualities.please advise me on which schools I should look into,I have no college only a G.E.D.I live in astoria,ny . thank you !

Affordable? CUNY or SUNY programs

Mixed reviews? Keep in mind everyone at one time or another has an axe to grind. That being said you have to use some common sense analytical skills and read into reviews to see what is said and also what is not.

People complain about being removed from a program because they "failed by one point".. Well fair enough but if they knew where they needed to be beforehand... That is no small number of "complaints" are from those who were sitting close to the window's edge (academically), and all it took was one push...

Even the most academically gifted persons can find nursing school difficult.

Few things in life are perfect and nursing schools vary. Hunter-Bellevue (CUNY) has an excellent reputation, pass rates, and is affordable. However you'll read complaints about how the program is run, bureaucracy, etc... However it has been my experience those who are proactive, follow-up and in general know how to handle their business do well in any situation. Those that seem to need everything spelled out in minute detail, cannot read *and* comprehend what they are instructed or research OTOH usually are going to have problems.

Forty years of age? Well forty isn't fatal..... People have gone to nursing school in their 40's and 50's, graduated and found work.

If you live in NYC and finances are tight I'd suggest looking at CUNY schools first. Even if you take prerequisite courses there and transfer/apply to a private school you'll save money overall.

You first need to decide if you are going to go for an ADN or BSN degree. If the latter there are only two maybe three undergraduate programs from CUNY. The rest are either ADN, RN to BSN or Second Degree BSN.

Since you lack previous college work you'll enter as a rank freshman. Again I'd choose CUNY because of the lower cost even if you only start taking a few courses then later become a full time student.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist in math to become a RN, but schools will have some sort of testing requirement (NLN or HESI are the most common) so you'll need to brush up on your math skills. To attend full time as a formally admitted student both CUNY and SUNY will require a math placement exam. Depending upon your score you may need remediation before being allowed to take college level math classes.
