Nursing School Trouble

Published

A university I attended made me withdraw from their hybrid nursing program due to having COVID symptoms over a year ago. I tried to come back, but they told me they didn't have clinicals in my area and never would, even though the admissions department told me they would find me a clinical placement within my city or within 100 miles of me before applying. Finding a placement site within 100 miles was listed in their student handbook as well. Admissions even told me I could complete clinical in my city prior to me enrolling. But after I attended and was forced to withdraw, they told me if I didn't relocate to their state I would not be able to continue. I couldn't afford to relocate at the time, so I told them I needed to save money.

Now, I can afford to relocate. I applied for readmission but the process seems more difficult than it should be. I notified the college that I would relocate to the state of the college so they could find me a clinical placement (exactly what they wanted me to do over a year ago). Now, they are giving me "reasons" why they can't find a placement. They told me I need to work as a CNA before they can accept me for clinical, which is not on their admissions requirements. They are making new rules for me, which is not fair at all. I'm not sure what I can do at this point. Everything I do what they ask they come up with a new requirement.

I think you have dodged a bullet with this school if it is the one I am thinking of. What a cockamamie curriculum. It may be the first ABSN program established but:

Quote

For all five rotations, accelerated nursing students work the same schedule as their nurse preceptors, which may include days, evenings, nights, weekends and/or holidays. Due to the compressed format of the curriculum, students need to be available 24/7 to work their preceptors' hours.

Okay, say you did clinical on nights..then

Quote

Students participate in live, online discussions with the instructor and other students in addition to the precepted clinical rotations.

Then you can have a OB clinical or Mental health  clinicals: not both

Quote

Students will be assigned to one of the specialty areas based on agency and preceptor availability

Pediatric or Geriatric clinicals?

Students will be assigned to one of the specialty areas based on agency and preceptor availability.

And what are you paying?

Tuition for the 12-month Accelerated BSN Option is $46,500, which includes course software and NCLEX-RN prep course.

Please let me know if I have quoted the wrong school but I think there are better programs out there.

If you are out money and they won't work with you I would review the facts of your situation with a lawyer and see if they think they can help.

Good luck ~

@londonflo I definitely agree that there are better options out there. But I don't understand how they could do this to me after I put in so much work and money. I'm out over 30k and multiple classes that won't transfer. Also, the time I wasted saving up to relocate for them and being in the program has made it so I'll have to repeat some prerequisites for other programs; they have really messed me up. To make things worse, I had several admissions offers which is very upsetting, as I could have been an RN by now.

@JKL33 Thank you, I was trying to avoid that but if I have to I'll investigate my options. It seems in their best interest to let me back in but they are trying to make it impossible, and I have no idea why. I didn't do anything wrong, but they treat me like I have.

would your prerequisites transfer to another UW program?

Another nursing program there? Potentially, but if I can't finish my ABSN I don't see the purpose of pursuing a different nursing program with the same school that messed me over, as I definitely do not trust them anymore. I already have a non-nursing bachelor's. It seems like my chances at getting my RN have been destroyed due to my evolvement with this university, unless I completely start over and spend more money.

I just don't get why they won't let me back in. I find it unbelievable that they can't find a clinical placement since I am willing to do whatever they ask. But their requests are becoming ridiculous and they won't guarantee me a spot even if I do everything they ask and uproot my life again.

This is a doozy! Some questions I have...

Why would you attend a nursing program so far away and is there one closer?

Have you checked to see if this school is accredited?

Were you physically attending this college and had covid symptoms so you had to miss classes, and they kicked you out for attendance? Because even with covid symptoms, online can be done to an extent. Did you test positive for covid?

I would make sure you are double-checking for accreditation on any nursing program. A lot of the time nursing students want to bring up the handbook to try and show the school is at fault, however, the handbooks I've read regarding a few nursing programs state, "handbook is subject to change at the discretion of instructors and or director.?"

It sounds like you might've dodged a bullet though, and do not give up on your goal to become a nurse!

Unfortunately some schools are just not for you. If this is your first choice, I would broaden your horizons into other college's in your area and price point.

I also do not like that this school seems to change their requirements. They seem very unorganized and you deserve to go to a school you trust and believe in.

Hope this helps ?

No UW has multiple schools throughout the state.

Is the Covid time the only time you were absent? I am not saying this is you. I said I had a student who claimed her sleep apnea made her foggy and that was the reason of her mistakes in pulling meds. She told me she would see the Respiratory MD the next week. 3 weeks later she was still a zombie and  I asked the outcome of the MD appointment. She said my insurance doesn't cover it. The next week she was absent as she was off to Disney World. After she got back she told us she was exposed to swine flu. More time off.
