I am a senior in high school and was wondering two things about nursing school before I make my final decision.

1. What was the hardest thing in nursing school either classses or clinical?

2. Do you get use to the gross procedures you have to perform on patients? If so, how quickly?

I would apprecaite any advice. Thanks so much I love this board!

Do you mean do you get used to doing things to clients? yes and no. You get good at doing them but sometimes it breaks your heart to cause pain or discomfort or to see patients struggles.

The clinical were where the rubber meets the road or you get to apply what you have learned. You frequently learn things that you are not exposed to in the classroom during your clinicals.

I found that clinicals seemed to be easier. There you were not doing textbook examples, seemed that there was always something different about each case.

Lectures were harder because you never knew where an instuctor was coming from when it came to exams. You (not to scare you) really have not much a life outside of school because you have to dedicate so much time and energy into studying/learning the skills.

I didn't have a problem with "gross" things. I worked in the ER and have learned to separate myself from those things. Although there are still some things that I can't tolerate very well. For example a gangrenous foot. The smell alone is enough to choke a horse...but everyone has their spots of intollerance. Hope this helps!

Personally I think clinicals are easier. After my first week of clinicals, I finally started to feel like I was working so hard for a reason. (Working w/ pt's is alot better than snuggling up with a textbook.) Classes are hard because there is so much information to wade through, it makes it hard to concentrate on the information that is the most important i.e. - what's on the test

(don't get me wrong, all of it is important, but many times I concentrate the most on what the teacher hits us the hardest with in lecture, then the test rolls around and she hits us w/ somehthing completely out there)

I think there are certain things that gross us all out. For example, I will never "get used" to the smell of stale urine. I can handle it, but I don't think I'll EVER get used to it!! :chair:

Hope that helps! :D

I agree clincials are easier once you get comfortable with your setting, and that doesn't take long at all.

Lectures were the toughest, especially adult health. There is so much to learn in such a short time. That's where we lost most of our class.

As far as gross things, Im surprised. I was expecting a lot of things to gross me out, but most don't. And if I start to feel a little grossed out, I can usually focus on something else until the feeling passes.
