You've finished all the pre-req and have been accepted, your uniforms are good to go - you are a NURSING STUDENT. Now, you need that all-important survival kit. O.k. ... highlighter, check ... planner, check ... pens, check ... coffee, check ... tablet or smart phone, check. Did I say coffee?? So, what's in YOUR survival kit??

Besides the necessary stuff like pens, calculator, etc. I have my chapstick, fruit and a granola bar, Tide whiteout pen (my scrub top is white), cash, gum, and girly products. Not too much stuff!

Specializes in Critical/Acute Care, Burns, Wound Care.

Forget all of the belongings. What actually helped me to survive nursing school was making very good friends with some of my fellow students. We are still close friends to this day, even though we no longer work in the same hospital. You NEED someone to help you prepare for tests, remind you of due dates, loan you their stethoscope and celebrate the joy of an A+ on a test or your first successful IV start, or to mourn with you when you fail a skills check-off, forget your careplan or have a patient die. Instructors often change things around so quickly that one mind cannot keep it straight. You've simply GOT TO make a close friend or you will struggle. That's what I tell all nursing students.

Nursing School Survival Kit

1) Organization - from all your supplies day of to your class due dates, to your nursing process in the room this is key to nursing

2) Friends - a family support system is fine but a support system from your nursing school who are going through what you are going through is important, rant, study, hang out, eat, and study some more

3) Confidence - nothing in nursing is going to be accomplished by being behind the curtain and unsure so be confident about and what you dont know, and be brave! give yourself a pep talk if you have too!
