Nursing school and relationships

Published

I juat wanted to ask fellow nursing students and those who have already graduated, how did you manage to balance nursing school and a relationship? I haven't even started classes yet and I'm already seeing g all the obstacles I'm going to have to face in my relationship. My boyfriend lives half an hour away but is working at a hospital 45 minutes away. He'll be working nights in the ER and I'll be in school all day. What tips or advice can you give to help me with this transition? Thank you!!

What obstacles do you think you will face?

Well the biggest one is making time to see each other since there is such a distance

It is all in your prioritizing and time management skills. I am married with 2 children and still find more than enough time to spend with my family (including little getaways, sports, etc) and to see friends. I also take between 15-19 credit hours per semester. I graduate in the fall :)

I'm married with three kids as well...it isn't easy in any situation you're in. I am lucky that my husband knows this is a temporary situation and that I'm not doing this only for me but for them as well so he has graciously accepted the lack of time we get together. We fit in as much as we can but its not always enough. I believe it does take a string relationship to get through it but since your young with no kids it should be doable for you to still spend time with him. Your boyfriend will need to understand that your time will be limited at times though and not become resentful. GL I hope it works out for ya!

Both parties need to recognize that it won't be easy. My boyfriend has been awesome. We spend every evening after work together. Just remember little things too. Like I can be in the same room doing school work while he is watching tv but we are still together and spending time together. Communication is always a must.

Try to set a time frame like we did Wednesdays was our nights although sometimes it shifted to Tuesdays or Fridays.

Right now, it is not working so well because I am on a rotating schedule (no consistent days). He is irritating right now because he doesn't get how tough school is for a MSN program and he feels like I am always too busy. It was better when I was in undergrad.
