Nursing school pre requisites

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have decided to embark on a nursing career. I currently have a Bachelor's degree in Communications. I met with a nursing program advisor. I need to boost my GPA. It was suggested I enroll in classes I.e.English 101, College Algebra. I thought I would be able to enroll in these classes at a community college. After I enrolled in the classes: i was informed I couldn't attend the classes because I had not declared a major.

At the same time, I was informed their nursing program is very competitive. I don't wish to enroll in their program. Is this standard in Illinois that a person has to declare a major prior to enrolling in a class?

I'm looking forward to direction. i am determined to accomplish my goal.

Specializes in CCU, SICU, CVICU.

For most classes like that, I'm pretty sure you can enroll as a non-matriculated student. When I retook Stats at CC, I did it as a non-matriculated student with no issues.

I live in Illinois.. I attended a small state university in the suburbs of Chicago. I took all of my prerequisites at this college for cheap and I never declared a major since I was just taking general education classes there.

Though I took any class I want and had no problems with getting in any of them with no major. As long as I was taking at least 12 credit hours then I was fine and didn't need to pay out of pocket for any of my classes.

If you need to declare a major to get financial aid (as is with most circumstances) then just declare your major as pre-nurisng/ nursing student or any other degree that will give you equivalent classes. Then utilize your financial aid and take at least 12 credit hours. Fortunately, it looks like you just need some really basic general education classes so really any major will do.

If you don't want to do this then you would have to just pay out of pocket for those last two classes or hope you come by a very good scholarship.

I live in Illinois and did not have to declare a major while taking prerequisites.
