Nursing school in London

Published

I'm not sure if I'm asking this question in the right category. I'm new to allnurses.

So, I finally decided a few years ago to go for a career change (I've been a veterinarian for 11 years). I completed my prerequisites and I was just accepted to Northeastern's accelerated BSN program. (It's a school in Boston). Yeah! Of course, my husband was just recruited for a job in London. We have always wanted to move internationally and he wants this career move. We also love London! We have 2 small children. Are there similar accelerated (16 month full time) programs in London for an RGN? Do I need a visa or other permission to go to school there for nursing and get a nursing job?

Thanks, in advance, to anyone who can help me.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

You will need to look at universities and see however generally because of the way nursing is funded from the government it is hard to find university willing to take international students for nursing. If you do find one if your husband's visa lets you work and study you may be ok but if not then you will need a student visa. Also be aware UK training is specialist and not general so if back in the USA then more courses will be in a lot of cases required

Specializes in Critical care.

There are shortened courses in the UK delivered at postgraduate diploma level or at masters level, however I don't know if you'd qualify for funding as there are certain residency and nationality requirements you have to meet to be able to get funding. Our courses are funded by the NHS, along with a bursary. They don't really take on international students as far as I can remember. EU nationals qualify for their course fees to be paid, but they don't receive a bursary. I'm sorry it all sounds like doom and gloom, it might be an idea to have a look at which universities in London run a shortened pre reg nursing course and see if they can help out.

We don't have general nurses at the moment in the UK btw, we train nurses in branches so adult, mental health, child or learning disabilities. A lot of places still refer to nurses as RGNs, some even advertise for RGNs for jobs when they actually mean RN(A).
