Hello,
I am currently enrolled in Pre-Nursing at my local community college looking to transfer into a Nursing Program in a nearby town. One of the requirements for the application is to write an essay on one of the following:
1.) Tell why you would like to become a nurse.
2.) Describe a basic health care issue facing society today.
3.) If you could be a famous person (real or fictional), who would you choose to be?
I figured that essay #1 could be easily passed over if the student hasn't had any remarkable experiences that led them to this calling. Essay #3 might be a difficult subject, so I figured Essay #2 about health care issues would be best. Any advice?
I thought I could write about the nursing shortage or health insurance coverage issues. I was told not to cite sources and everything has to be your own thoughts on these subjects. zi'm having a hard time writing this essay..If anyone can give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it. :)

Its seems pretty simple, what was the first thought in your mind when you read the question. Then elaborate. I think they want to get to know you, #3 people will probably go with florence nightingale ..womp womp wompppp. Go with someone you REALLY want to be. I would pick angelina jolie, she flies planes, pwns a desert eagle, and cooks crickets.
You've got good topics, just run with it meng.

you said the directions were that these were to be your own thoughts. if you have no thoughts about #2, then pick #1 or #3. i'd go with option #3. i think you have many choices with #3. i would begin by thinking about what characteristics are desired in every nurse: compassion, caring, nonjudgmental, kindness, intelligence, the ability to think rationally, flexibility, the ability to work under pressure to name a few. then think of famous people (real or fictional) who had just one of those characteristics. then write your essay about them and discuss the characteristic you chose, give examples of the things they did that show that this person is a role model of this characteristic, and finally why you admire them (of course, because of the link to nursing). if you need more on the definition of nursing see http://www.discovernursing.com/
this kind of an essay is basic english comp 101 stuff for a college freshman.
This essay may be quite an easy topic, but I simply do not want it to be looked over because it is what everyone goes with. I am looking to make it original and agree with you both that option number 3 might actually be a good topic. I am leaning toward Oprah Winfrey--she has many excellent qualities and attributes and has done a lot for the good of society. I am just concerned with making it sound to cliche(she helps people, she cares, etc)..if you have any suggestions i would love to hear them..
Thank you!
rather than it sounding cliché (helping, caring--hello? that's what nurses do!) i'd be a lot more concerned that this essay is (1) grammatically correct (2) well-organized and constructed and conveys your ideas clearly (3) has a wow! factor of some sort, and (4) if it brings a tear to somebody's eyes, all the better. as i mentioned before they are looking to see if you can write a basic english comp 101 paper. why? rns today have to write reports, document what they do for patients and it needs to be understandable. if they want to drill you over your sincerity for being a nurse, they can do that in an interview. the fact that choice #3 doesn't even ask you to state why you want to be a nurse says they are not concerned with you telling them why you want to be a nurse. read those directions and choices over again real carefully. they want to see if you can write clearly and convey an idea! be smart as i said earlier. write about a philosophical ideal that every good nurse should have that some great person is known for, that you admire and leave it at that. let your english prose, thoughts and reflections on this ideal speak for you. nursing today is more than just being caring and compassionate. rns today have to be rational thinkers and problem solvers or they don't stay employed for very long in hospitals. being able to give comfort and do nursing procedures isn't enough as you will quickly find out if and when you make it into nursing classes.
Thank you, that really helps a lot.
