I am currently a US student in nursing and I am interested in eventually nursing in montreal. What are the primary steps for this? Has anyone had any experience with this process?

Thanks!

I can't believe the pay for a nurse practioner is so low! Thank You again for the info.

It's a real joke,:jester: I have a feeling that since the nurse practioner role is very new there that they don't know a valuable the NP can be. In my ICU they are a gem, I wish we could clone them...:saint::heartbeat:idea:

They don't pay much in Quebec in general, hopefully with the new "decret" (due I believe in March 09), the government will be more realistic and + generous. :twocents:They are losing a lot of new and experienced nurses to burnout, moving to others + lucrative provinces or states...That is what their newspapers such as Le Soleil (cyberpresse.com) and the FIQ reports anyways...and annual reports of the "Sante et Services Sociaux" that I read yesterday.

I wish they had agencies for nurses too...

I too am an american nurisng student wanting to practice in Quebec. My mom is from there so I think I would easily get Canadien citizenship. The only problem is that my French is very rusty. I did get the impression from the MGH website that they will teach you French, but the nursing board makes it sound like you need to know French. I am glad to hear that the test is available in English. Thank you everyone for the info. It helped make the process seem a little less confusing. If anyone could give any info on the pay, that would be very helpful. I do have a lot of student loans to pay off.

Erin, that question was answered already (I ask the same one!). Got to fiiq and download the "decret" should be a pdf document and browse over. your seniority should count entirely. You have a year to brush up on French (see I have to learn some of their abreviations and disease too, and lab values are different).

The best way is to make french friends (funny enough: I am french myself but have way more anglophones friends!).

Don't hesitate to write to me for translations, I will do my best for you. You can learn french, I learn english while going to nursing school!

One more thing, be persistent in having the board OIIQ to approve your US education. Get to this soon, it takes awhile to go through and gatter the mountain of documents they need.:uhoh3::bugeyes:

Good luck Erin,

Hi! I, too, am US-educated RN with BSN and 10 months of work experience in California (med-surg). I am moving to Montreal for personal reasons. I went over the links in this thread and the OIIQ is written in French. There is no English translation at all.

I am more than willing to learn French but I do need time. I can't be fluent in a year but I will put in the effort.

Do I need to show proof of my Canadian residency or citizenship before I can apply for my RN license in Quebec? I spoke to my immigration lawyer and she said that some Americans and Asians do work in English hospitals in Montreal so I was wondering if those nurses are still working with a permit that requires a supervisor?

Hey! This is off topic, but I'm just wondering how working as an lpn in a quebec hospital is. Im aware you may not be one but Im just curious as to how they are treated and what kinds of jobs they are able to perform. I'm looking into the lpn course and I just want to make sure I know what Im getting myself into. n e info would help :) Thanks!

i am staff nurse working in kuwait MOH, for your kind information, french is must in quebec. Without RN can i work there.

I dont know where else to write this..

I am kind of in the same situation except from Ontario!

I am a RPN and trying to figure out how to get into Quebec for nursing...

I was wondering if anyone knows if the OIIQ deals with practical nurses. Is OIIQ like the CNO for us in Ontario? LIke a general place for us to register?

Also if anyone has any other tips please feel free to email me as much information as [email protected]

Thanks.

For LPN/RPN in Quebec, you'll want to deal with L'Ordre des Infirmiers et Infirmieres Auxilliaires du Quebec Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers auxiliaires du Québec - OIIAQ (english version of the page.. but loads of broken links)

http://www.oiiaq.org/ Original french version of the site.

They are the liscencing body that oversees RPN's in QC (Inf. Aux. or nurse auxilliary)

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

Google Chrome will translate the French into English for you.
